Position Announcement

The University of Oregon’s Environmental Studies Program, situated within the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya people, invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Ecological Economics, to begin in Fall 2024.

We seek a scholar specialized in the transdisciplinary field of Ecological Economics studying the interactions of human economies and societies with the broader ecosystems that support life on Earth and with expertise in diverse methods at the interface between the social and natural sciences.

We are open to candidates adopting various methodological approaches and working at any or multiple social-ecological scale(s) in any social-ecological system. But research areas are expected to have direct relevance to underrepresented and vulnerable populations, broadly defined, and ideally be oriented towards the participation of and collaboration with local and Indigenous communities, tribal nations, and policy makers.

Special consideration will be given to candidates with a strong commitment to issues of equity and environmental justice whose scholarship focuses on core concepts in Ecological Economics including but not limited to ecological limits, social-ecological systems, sustainability and degrowth, multiple knowledge systems, and diverse valuation approaches.

We will give special consideration to candidates who are committed to collaborative scholarship, transdisciplinary, and innovative research with potential for societal impact. We seek candidates who engage in teaching that addresses current sustainability-related issues, that offers innovative pedagogy, and/or that links to existing ENVS experiential learning, such as the Environmental Leadership Program.

We particularly welcome applications from scholars who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

This position will be integrated with the newly formedEnvironment Initiative (https://environment.uoregon.edu/) , an area of strategic investment at the University of Oregon. The Environment Initiative focuses the intellectual energy and work of faculty, students, and community partners on efforts to create a just and livable future through transdisciplinary research, teaching, and experiential learning.

The Environmental Studies Program has a long-standing commitment to inter- and transdisciplinary scholarship and teaching addressing all aspects of socio-ecological relationships. It includes faculty and students from across the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and professional schools. Environmental Studies has successful PhD and Master’s degree programs and offers popular undergraduate majors.

Minimum Requirements

• PhD in discipline relevant to the transdisciplinary field of Ecological Economics, including but not limited to environmental and geo-sciences, ecology, policy and planning, environmental sociology, political ecology, law, engineering, applied economics, anthropology, political science, geography, feminist economics, sustainability science, and other interdisciplinary fields relating to environmental studies

• expertise in diverse methods at the interface between the social and natural sciences

• research with direct relevance to underrepresented and vulnerable populations, broadly defined

Preferred Qualifications

• Research oriented towards the participation of and collaboration with local and Indigenous communities, tribal nations, and policy makers
