TORRANCE COUNTY Community Service Officer in Estancia, New Mexico

  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers within Torrance County. Be a goodwill ambassador to the community they serve.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality in all areas of responsibility.
  • Transports prisoners to and from court.
  • Serve some civil processes (None that require a certified sworn deputy to process).
  • Provide courtroom security.
  • Operates marked motor vehicle, driving to dispatch-based calls for services, conducts minor investigations under direct supervision, and writes thorough reports.
  • Identifies and safely removes or arranges for the removal of road hazards.
  • Keep dispatch personnel advised of call progress during and after calls for service.
  • Take informational reports, including those for lost property, found property, civil matters, abandoned vehicles, animal pick-ups, and traffic accidents.
  • May be called upon to testify in court hearings for civil or criminal prosecution cases.
  • Refers citizens to the appropriate agency for matters that exceed the scope of responsibility for Community Service Aides.
  • Conducts basic research using criminal databases to assist sworn officers in investigations and court cases.
  • Respond to less-serious traffic-related issues; private property collisions; motorist assistance (car trouble); towing services (abandoned vehicles, collisions, and snow tows); and traffic direction at collision scenes, fires, and related incidents.
  • Conducts vehicle accident investigation, including measuring distances, making necessary calculations, drawing diagrams, coordinating accident scenes, and assisting the deputies where needed.
  • Assist with restoring minor traffic scene incidents to normalcy by removing damaged vehicles through contracted towing services and performing accident cleanup in the area, ensuring the safe continued use of traffic highways.
  • May provide traffic control assistance to regular officers as assigned or needed in connection with special or emergencies.
  • Assists stranded motorists in gaining access to locked vehicles through locksmith services or, for vehicle repair needs, contacting contracted wrecker services for safe vehicle removal/transport.
  • Investigates abandoned vehicles to determine ownership and provides for the safe and legal removal of abandoned vehicles; completes necessary paperwork for vehicle abandonment procedures.
  • Conduct proactive public services such as residence and business checks.
  • Completes routine daily reports thoroughly and completely according to established reporting standards of the Torrance County Sheriffs Office.
  • When and if certified, safely carry and, only, when necessary, operate a taser and/or pepper spray following defensive tactics training guidelines.
  • Participate in community service and education activities to promote Sheriffs programs, such as visiting schools and giving educational talks.
  • Attends ongoing training as part of a performance development plan created by the certified training officer or supervisor.
  • Report any suspicious activities to commissioned officers.
  • Recognizes calls for service that require the intervention of commissioned officers and requests officers promptly to resolve issues of complexity and/or high level of risk.
  • Performs various administrative duties as part of regular work responsibilities or for special requests as assigned by a supervisor.
  • Provides fingerprinting service as directed by a supervisor for the community.
  • Assists sheriff deputies in sex offender and other registration processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
