UPMC Specimen Processor in Erie, Pennsylvania

Are you ready to become a life-changer? Our UPMC Hamot laboratory team has a casual Specimen Processor opening to consider! This role is vital in ensuring accurate diagnoses and patient care. This position will serve 12 hours a week in variable first, second, and third shifts with rotating weekends and holidays.

Service Orientation: Demonstrate a service-oriented approach by treating colleagues, patients, and specimens with courtesy, respect, and enthusiasm. Your positive attitude contributes to a supportive work environment.

Assisting Completion: Show initiative by actively assisting in completing department tasks. Your proactive approach helps maintain efficiency.

Timely Processing: Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure specimens are processed promptly. Timeliness is crucial for accurate results.

Problem Resolution: Investigate and resolve any requesting mistakes or specimen-related issues. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance when needed.

Quality Forms: Complete quality forms for unacceptable specimens or requesting errors. Properly separate specimens by centrifugation.

Labeling and Transfer: Label appropriate aliquot tubes according to policy and transfer samples as required. Proper storage at the correct temperature is essential.

Data Entry: Enter the specimen receive time into the computer system accurately. Be prepared to answer telephone inquiries regarding specimen collection, results, and normal ranges.

Safety Compliance: Follow health and safety regulations when handling biohazardous patient samples or sharps. Prevent exposure and maintain a safe environment.

Specimen Verification: Verify patient specimens (such as blood, urine, and other body fluids) against requisitions or labels. Ensure information matches paperwork and the correct specimen is used.

External Specimens: Prepare, package, and send specimens to outside locations as needed. Proper handling ensures reliable results.

Prioritization: Receive, sort, and prioritize all specimens according to laboratory policies. Effective organization is key.

Communication: Share specimens as necessary and promptly notify your supervisor of any problems or requests requiring attention.

Hygiene and Training: Disinfect your work area as needed. Additionally, participate in orienting and training new laboratory specimen processors.

Required

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers (as well as co-workers) both by telephone and in person.

Preferred

  • Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or other medical environment preferred, including knowledge of or experience in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systems.

  • Three to six months of experience in a service environment including call center, customer service center, or product distribution/fulfillment center.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
