UPMC Hamot, a Magnet-designated facility in Erie, PA, is seeking a Casual Professional Staff Nurse to join our 7 South unit. This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse to gain diverse skills in an acute medical-oncology setting while providing compassionate, high-quality care.
Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.
Position Overview:
The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse responsible for delivering high-quality patient care in collaboration with the healthcare team. This role involves setting care standards, applying independent judgment, and establishing strong relationships with patients, families, and healthcare providers to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The nurse will manage patient care for a group of patients, demonstrating leadership, collaboration, and accountability within the unit.
Unit Overview:
7 South is a 46-bed acute medical-oncology unit providing care for adults, including geriatric patients, with a range of medical illnesses. The unit specializes in oncology care, administering chemotherapy and supporting patients receiving treatments like blood transfusions, IV hydration, heparin drips, wound care, and more. With 12 step-down beds, the unit also cares for patients needing higher levels of care. This is an excellent opportunity for nurses to learn diverse skills in a supportive team environment.
Responsibilities:
Apply the nursing process to create a healing environment and develop individualized care plans in partnership with patients.
Use critical thinking to address clinical, social, and psychological needs and communicate effectively with the care team to optimize patient care.
Ensure comprehensive documentation to promote effective communication among caregivers.
Support patient safety, quality, and satisfaction by adhering to national standards and organizational goals.
Build strong relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, fostering compassionate, patient-centered care.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and identify opportunities for enhancing care.
Utilize evidence-based practices to improve clinical care and contribute to multidisciplinary discussions.
Maintain a positive work environment, balancing professional responsibilities and personal well-being.
Teach and mentor patients, families, and new staff, supporting their learning and transition of care.
Actively engage in professional development, shared governance, and team collaboration to improve care and practice.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served, with an understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
Ability to assess patient status and interpret age-specific needs to provide care in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience; BSN preferred.
Ability to establish positive, caring relationships with all members of the healthcare team, including executives, physicians, non-physician providers, support staff, and patients/families.
Strong ability to work effectively in a complex environment, manage multiple priorities, and use specialized equipment.
Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills essential for patient care.
Ability to lead others in applying the nursing process and demonstrate sound clinical judgment.
Mobility, manual dexterity, and physical stamina to walk, stand, lift, and position patients regularly.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
UPMC-approved national certification preferred.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the practicing state.
CPR certification based on AHA standards, including a didactic and skills demonstration, required within 30 days of hire.
ACLS certification required within 1 year.
NIHSS certification required within 6 months.
Act 34 clearance required.
