UPMC Professional Staff Nurse, 4 South Trauma in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join the 4 South Trauma team! This fast-paced trauma and orthopedic unit provides you with a wealth of learning and critical thinking skills that can be applied in any nursing practice. Apply today to join our life saving team!

Unit: 4 South is a 23-bed Trauma and Orthopedics unit. This medical-surgical unit is a great place for nurses to care for a variety of patients with different medical needs. The team provides nursing care to the trauma population (patients involved in motor vehicle accidents, gunshot, stabbing and assault victims, fall injuries, etc.), and patients with bone injuries, infections, deformities due to trauma.

Shifts/Hours: Our RNs work a rotating 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.

Sign on bonus details (full-time):

  • $15,000* for Graduate Nurses (*Amount and eligibility based on type of nursing role and candidate experience)

  • $20,000* for Experienced Nurses (*Amount and eligibility based on type of nursing role and candidate experience)

Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse, a Registered Nurse, is a key member of the care delivery team. They set care standards, manage patient care, and collaborate with team members. Their role includes leadership, partnership, and supervision, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal patient outcomes. They are committed to both the community and the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains productive relationships by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

  • Understands cultural differences and promotes healthy relationships.

  • Balances work and personal life, models safe work hours, time management, and a healthy lifestyle.

  • Communicates safety hazards to peers and management.

  • Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff.

  • Provides detailed teaching to guide patients and families through care transitions.

  • Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues, and fosters continuous development through feedback.

  • Uses the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment.

  • Sets daily goals and plans of care with patients, considering their holistic needs.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues.

  • Zero to two years of experience; BSN preferred.

  • Works effectively in a complex environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Demonstrates mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

  • UPMC offers flexible options, including night and weekend shifts with premium pay. Six months of nursing experience required for these programs, with orientation during regular business hours. Interested candidates should inform their recruiter during the interview.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire/transfer.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) with in 6 months of hire/transfer.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)

  • Act 34

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.

  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within six months of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date, or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
