Lake Erie College Of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Campus Security Guard (part time) in ERIE, Pennsylvania

JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction, the Campus Security Guard's primary role is to prevent crime and the breach of public order. Primary responsibilities include protecting students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, patients, property, and facilities from accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. Other daily responsibilities include enforcing local, state and federal law and LECOM Policy and Procedure related to traffic and parking regulations, apprehending violators, providing general information and assistance to the public, conducting investigations and participating in community oriented policing efforts. Must be available for 2nd, 3rd, weekend, and holiday shifts  Our need is greatest right now for coverage on Saturdays and Sundays.

 CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promotes and preserves the mission of LECOM;
  • Act as departmental representative with faculty, staff and visitors in a professional friendly manner at all times;
  • Maintain confidentiality, professional appearance and pleasant demeanor;
  • Patrol the Institution on foot / vehicle and answer calls to protect personnel, property and various facilities independently or with another to ensure overall Institutional safety; 
  • Enforce laws, traffic regulations, restraining orders and safety regulations, escort people off campus (i.e. restraining orders, dismissed personnel, disruptive students...etc.); 
  • Investigate and record irregularities which occur during assigned shifts and take necessary action within limits or prescribed policies and procedures to correct the situation. Respond to and investigate threats; respond to traffic accidents and document the accident within a detailed report; complete work requisitions to maintenance, in order to fix and repair physical plant defects and safety hazards across the Institution; 
  • Prepare written reports of irregularities or violations of law and maintain a log of daily activities;
  • Assist other law enforcement officers on campus;
  • Monitor student, employee and visitor activities on campus;
  • Enforce college policies e.g., Smoking, Food and Beverage, Weapons, Drug and Alcohol;
  • Enforce parking regulations and issue parking tickets;
  • Investigate and report on non-criminal incidents that occur of campus;
  • Observe and report on safety hazards found on campus;
  • Submits Incident Reports on actions taken;
  • Enter Daily Activity Reports to the Director of Security and/or his/her designee;
  • Process found and abandoned property on campus;
  • Annotate Incident Log, conduct video surveillance through CCTV system Monitor and controls access to facility through proximity card access system and lock and key system;
  • Monitor and react to the intrusion alarm system in campus facilities;
  • Control, issue and receive operational keys used by employees on a daily basis;
  • Monitor and react to the automated fire alarm system in campus facilities;
  • Monitor and report on contract snow plowing operations in winter and keeps north entryway free of snow and ice during periods when maintenance personnel are not on campus;
  • Follow policy and procedures for cadaver deliveries when the anatomy staff is not on campus;
  • Conducts student and employee escorts on campus during hours of darkness;
  • Provides outgoing long distance call services after normal business hours;
  • Enter incident reports either manually or through automated information system;
  • Provide lunch relief for librarian on second shift and weekends;
  • Monitor and control access and activities in Fitness Center;
  • Receive and report on incoming business calls to college after normal business hours
  • Performs administrative, investigative and support duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Police and Security; and
  • Accepts other duties as assigned / needed to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.

Job Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Strong computer literacy with MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel...etc.) and accurate data entry skills; 
  • Maintaining an established work schedule;
  • Adhere to all local, state, federal laws and LECOM policies and procedures;
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines;
  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, policies / procedures and/or guidelines affecting areas of responsibility;
  • Ability to be self-reliant and follow instructions;
  • Must have sound decision making capabilities and the ability to work independently and as directed by the Institutional Director of Police and Security and/or his/her designee;
  • Capable of assuming responsibility; initiating appropriate action; and maintaining confidentiality;
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain confidentiality of patient (HIPAA) and student privacy (FERPA);
  • Compliance with State and Federal Regulations and Safety Protocols (OSHA), at the clinic level;
  • Must be trained and certified on the Institutional Data System;
  • Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills, including tact and diplomacy;
  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills, including attention to detail and follow-through;
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands;
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work related information and materials;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;
  • Be able to be flexible to accept other duties needed/assigned for the Institution's needs;
  • The ability to work cooperatively and collegially with others, consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect and EEO rules and regulations;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: a minimum of a high school diploma and/or equivalent required. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License with appropriate level of insurance. Strong computer skills preferred. Successful candidate must possess efficient and effective verbal and written communications skills, multi-task and problem solve to properly support and promote the mission of LECOM. Former military police experience preferred. Prior experience in higher education or Non-Profit organizations preferred.
