RATE OF PAY:           $20.00hour

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Earth and Environment, the Environmental Summer Student will join a multi-disciplinary team of specialists and assist with a broad range of tasks related to supporting ONTC environmental projects, initiatives and operations. This position is a terrific opportunity for a young professional to contribute to a dynamic team, while gaining valuable work experience in the growing rail/transportation sector.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting ONTC specialists with various environmental project work, tasks and initiatives

  • Working within (and learning about) a range of technical disciplines including environmental assessment/management, research and monitoring studies (e.g., geosciences/geo-engineering; soil, groundwater and surface water; natural sciences, terrestrial and wildlife; wetland/waterbody; fish habitat; species at risk, sustainability, etc.)

  • Assisting with work activities related to environmental oversight, monitoring, restoration works, legacy site management and GIS mapping

  • Carrying out various desktop tasks, as needed, including background information reviews, meetings and note-taking, file organization, technical research, database compilation, analysis and reporting

  • Participating in, and assisting with, environmental field work, sampling programs, site inspections, vendor/consultant liaison and construction monitoring

  • Assisting with ONTC environmental sustainability projects and initiatives

  • Helping with general operational tasks and environmental improvement projects, as needed

  • Good field/office mix anticipated (approx. 50/50)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program (College or University) studying environmental sciences or related technical field

  • May to August placement intended (i.e., 4-months)

  • Must be able to work full-time hours (i.e., Mon to Fri, 8 am to 4 pm; though field work hours may vary, on occasion)

  • Good work ethic, energetic and enthusiastic

  • Good initiative with strong attention to detail

  • Works independently with little supervision

  • Experience working in northern regions an asset, with ability to work through sometimes difficult field conditions (e.g., remote areas, rugged terrain, around water, insects, inclement weather, etc.)

  • Experience working safely with various tools/field equipment and around construction/machinery considered an asset

  • Good computer skills and working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Valid G Driver's License

  • Must be committed to Health and Safety

  • Note: laptop (on loan), safety gear/PPE and relevant training to be provided
