In alignment with the mission, programs and initiatives of MSU Extension, delivers research-based information to program participants through various methods and/or provides support and coordination of MSU Extension programs.

Position Summary:

The Network for Inclusive Farm Business Engagement (NIFBE) Michigan Inter-Tribal Land Grant Extension Systems (MILES) Fellow will be responsible for providing educator-technical assistance to Michigan tribal producers, MILES, the Michigan Inter-Tribal Food Sovereignty Coalition (MITFSC), who directs tribal food sovereignty efforts across Michigan and MSU Extension to implement tribally focused projects each year.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.

  • Education, training and/or experience related to Indigenous agriculture or food systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet objectives, and accomplish goals with limited direct supervision.

  • Strong interpersonal relationship and problem-solving skills in a team setting.

  • Understanding of and experience working with tribal nations/indigenous nations and communities.

  • Familiarity with Indigenous food systems, sustainable agriculture, farming, forestry, and/or wild harvest.

  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.

  • Combination of education and specific, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.

  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.).

  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
