Job Description
MAIN FUNCTIONS:
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant I (CLA I) is responsible for performing the non-technical tasks, as assigned, within the Laboratory. These include, but are not limited to phlebotomy, specimen processing, light courier duties, and miscellaneous office functions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CORE COMPETENCIES: All duties must be performed as specified in the CLA Competency Checklist.
Performs required Accessioning Specimen duties; which includes receiving of specimens into the
laboratory computer system, labeling and decanting of specimens into proper containers prior to testing.
Performs required Phlebotomy duties with strict adherence to proper patient identification and specimen
labeling and following all safety guidelines and procedures according to established laboratory policy.
Employee will be trained if no prior experience.
Performs required reference laboratory specimen preparation utilizing the test catalog to determine
specimen type, stability, and transport requirements.
- Performs required 24 Hour Urine Volume duties, ensuring the total volume is accurately documented and urines are poured off into appropriate containers prior to testing according to specimen requirement.
Performs required Specimen Tracking duties. Must know the location of a specimen for additional
testing via the lab computer system. Knows how to add a test to original specimen when requested by a physician.
- Performs courier duties between AOMC and SJH.
Performs all required miscellaneous office functions, i.e. answers phones, checks and distributes faxes,
checks refrigeration if documented.

Understands that work in the Laboratory is dynamic and that the duties of a CLA will change over time as
regulatory requirements and the general environment of healthcare changes.It is understood that this job description lists typical duties for the classification and is not to be
considered inclusive of all duties which may be assigned.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizes and prioritizes workload and can identify time-sensitive tests and prioritizing as appropriate.
Demonstrates understanding of and maintains compliance with regulations appropriate to assigned duties and is ready for unannounced inspections by staff, local, state, and/or federal regulatory agencies. This includes, but is not limited to: Medical Center, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
Maintains a clean and orderly work environment, following laboratory, hospital, and accrediting agency safety and infection control guidelines.
Is familiar with and demonstrates Quality Improvement principles and participates in the process as appropriate.
Provides age appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license to perform light courier duties from AOMC to SJH and back. Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical effort required. Required to frequently lift objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift objects up to 40 pounds. Moderate reaching. Much bending and stooping. Required to be on one’s feet much of the time.
