POSITION PURPOSE:

The Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) is a generalist prepared at the bachelor’s degree level within 6 years. The major thrust of the CNM role knows the patient, communication, and integration of care. The CNM has specialized knowledge in horizontal leadership is accountable for the management of care and the care environment. In addition to the generalist preparation in nursing with enhanced clinical skills, the CNM is primarily setting based and is responsible for the patients and staff. In his or her day-to-day practice, the CNM develops an overall view of patients, families, and caregivers, and establishes strong partnerships with them to deliver optimal care. The CNM has 24-hour accountability for the care provided by self and others to whom care is delegated.

What you will do:

  • Performs or oversees the collection of a holistic assessment and the development and implementation of a plan of care in coordination with the admitting RN.

  • Oversees the management of patient care:

  • Assesses the patient population weekly.

  • Participates with the multidisciplinary rounding team in planning delivery and evaluation of patient focused care.

  • Trouble shoots complex problems in patient care, documents findings and progress in patient records.

  • Oversees and controls supplies that directly impact patient care.

  • Provides oversight to the Nursing Team, including Med/Surg/ER.

  • Directs all patient care activities, policies, and procedures, and maintains regulatory preparedness and financial responsibility.

  • Regularly participates in assigned committees and meetings, as designated by the CNO.

  • Assists and supports human resource functions for nursing staff including hiring and disciplinary action; maintains appropriate documentation.

  • Assumes managerial duties for performance evaluations and maintains systems to provide regular feedback and evaluation for employees.

  • Develops and maintains effective communication and collegiality both within the nursing department and throughout MercyOne.

  • Responsible for creating, maintaining, and revising the nursing schedule.

  • Serves as an active member of Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Team.

  • Work on Med Surg floor if needed.

  • Adept at utilizing traditional and developing methods of discovering, retrieving, and using information in nursing practice.

  • Ensures effective communication and flow of information to all appropriate care providers by obtaining appropriate comprehensive patient/family story and transmitting that effectively to care providers.

  • Utilizes information technology to obtain evidence-based practices and the latest research to provide current best practice information to care providers on the unit.

  • Develops and utilizes tools available to effectively evaluate, summarize, and communicate patient’s progress toward outcomes to members of the healthcare team, patient, and family.

  • Shares responsibility with ER Trauma Nurse Manager for nursing informatic duties.

  • Demonstrates leadership skills and is able to organize, manage, and evaluate function of a team.

  • Skilled at delegation, supervision, and evaluation of care given.

  • Able to advocate for professional standards of practice using organizational and political processes.

  • Skilled in mentoring, coaching, and a role model of the profession.

  • Creates opportunities to advocate for the role of the professional nurse as a key member of the interdisciplinary team

  • Participates in continuing education for self and the development of colleagues and future generations.

  • Maintains Employee Health records and updates staff employee health needs under the direction of a provider order.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • Must be a registered nurse and must hold an active license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.

  • Certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization is preferred and strongly encouraged.

  • The registered nurse continuously seeks opportunities to enhance his or her own professional nursing practice. Membership in an appropriate professional nursing organization is recommended.

  • Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter.

  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) will be required within 30 days of hire and every 2 years thereafter.

  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC required of the Leader in this role.
