Description
The Winter Public Works Laborer assists staff with snow removal activities throughout the city by shoveling, snow blowing, or plowing sidewalks. Also assists in maintaining ice rinks, equipment maintenance, tree trimming, and general maintenance. Operates light equipment.
Normal hours of work are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mon-Fri. Work outside of these hours required for snow removal. This is a seasonal position that will last no longer than six months.
Wage is $17.00 - $19.00 per hour DOQ. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The benefits for this position are limited to ESST.

Position Summary
The Winter Public Works Laborer assists city employees with snow removal activities throughout the city. This includes shoveling/blowing/plowing sidewalks around city facilities and downtown Elk River, clearing snow and surfacing outdoor skating rinks, cleaning snow removal equipment, etc.
Essential Functions
Performs snow and ice removal.
Conducts shoveling, blowing, plowing, and salting of snow and ice from city sidewalks and facilities following winter weather events.
Available to work all hours of the day or night during snow removal operations.
Available to work up to a 14-hour shift.
Inspects and reports any problems on site immediately.
Performs outdoor ice rink maintenance.
Plows snow from outdoor ice rinks and shovels along boards.
Conducts resurfacing of ice rinks.
Conducts general maintenance to include repair of ice rink boards, restringing nets, and emptying waste receptacles.
Performs general maintenance activities of Public Works as needed, including but not limited to:
Cuts or trims trees and brush on city property and road right-of-way.
Performs maintenance of snowplow equipment to include operator level maintenance of snow blowers, pickup trucks, and tractors.
Performs cleaning of snow removal equipment.
Performs facility maintenance at the Public Works Facility.
Performs other essential job duties.
Regular and timely work attendance.
Follows all safety procedures and participates in safety training.
Operates city equipment with care and respect.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to operate equipment including pickup trucks with plow, tractors with various attachments, and small engine equipment.
Ability to perform light mechanical maintenance.
Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse environmental conditions.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid Class D MN driver’s license and good driving record.
Demonstrated ability to operate light equipment proficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
Class B Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement.
Qualified snow removal experience or equivalent.
Experience operating single and tandem axel plow trucks with wing, underbody plow, road salting equipment and chemical pre-wet systems.
