The Systems Engineering Center in El Segundo is seeking a strong, technically sound multi-function engineer for the role of Senior Principal Systems Engineer who is committed and passionate about creating innovative, cost-effective solutions for advanced space-based architectures, systems and mission capabilities. The successful candidate will serve as the Senior Principal Systems Engineer on a new technology effort that is developing next generation laser communication technology for space based systems. The Senior Principal Systems Engineer will be responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance for several research and development efforts within Raytheon Intelligence and Space. This includes shaping new business opportunities, developing technology strategies and roadmaps and engaging across the corporation to position program proposals for success.

The Senior Principal Systems Engineer will provide significant technical leadership to the growing lasercomm line of business across the entire development cycle of the program. This includes architecture development, requirements development, system integration and test, verification and validation. This position reports to the communications product line lead and interfaces with customer, sub-contractors, program management, and functional managers and the Raytheon Intelligence and Space leadership team. The candidate will be responsible for supporting proposals for follow-on efforts, rough order magnitude estimates for new R&D and be responsible for execution on cost and schedule. This includes interaction with customers on status and program reviews.

Required Skills:

  • 10+ years of engineering experience with some experience in photonic integrated circuit system design and development

  • The ability to lead small teams of technologists to successful completion of research and development projects

  • Experience leading concurrent research programs focused on advanced optical sensors and novel designs of photonic integrated circuits.

  • Strong mechanical engineering background with some experience developing optical systems.

  • Experience with both active and passive sensing technologies as well as free space optical communications.

  • Experience in requirements development and flow-down for an optical communication system.

  • The ability to manage external research activities with government labs, FFRDC’s, commercial companies and universities.

  • Ability to coordinate between Raytheon internal organizations (cross-functional teams, customers and departments).

  • Ability to contribute to the development of new ideas and concepts, translate these ideas into executable action plans, and communicate these plans to a diverse client base.

  • Team oriented individual with strong interpersonal and communication skill.

    Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with Photonic integrated circuit foundries and Process Development Kits.

  • Familiarity with optical test stations and setups used for testing photonic integrated circuits.

  • Some experience with technical writing including proposals, final reports, IRAD requests as well as journal articles and technical proceedings.

  • Ability to mentor and lead engineering personnel to collaborate with members of other teams to accomplish problem resolution and other tasks in a timely manner.

  • Experience leading multi-discipline intra-company integrated product teams

  • Master's Degree/PhD in relevant field


  • BS degree in STEM discipline from an accredited University.

    U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active Top Secret U.S. Clearance and SSBI U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment*
