Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

Assumes the responsibility for performing phlebotomy skills appropriately and efficiently, under the philosophy, policies and procedures established by the hospital and the laboratory department. Performs general clerical duties and technical duties as assigned

POPULATION SERVED:

Core competencies will be assessed primarily on the following patient population(s) served: All diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Identifies patients and specimens collected from those patients using skill and knowledge.

  • Performs phlebotomy in a timely manner.

  • Perform complicated phlebotomy procedures (i.e. therapeutic phlebotomy, blood cultures).

  • Perform clerical duties.

  • Performs A.I.D.E.T. while consistently providing excellent customer service.

  • Operates Point of Care (POC) instruments and performs Point of Care testing per standard operating procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

No required licensure/certifications.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or GED required. Must have a minimum of three years verifiable phlebotomy experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Must possess leadership abilities. Preferred phlebotomy training certification from an accredited agency. Exhibit proficiency in all of the following: blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups, pediatric blood collections, difficult draws. Possess the ability and skills necessary to provide orientation and training for phlebotomist.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Ability to relate professionally with people, motivate others, organizational skills, time management, train employees, written and verbal communications, supervisory skills. Excellent customer service skills, knowledge of venipuncture techniques. Leadership abilities.
