Position Description:
A job involving an appointment for infrequent work where the employee is called in as needed. Employees in this position are responsible for augmenting a supervising physician's data gathering abilities to reach decisions and institute patient care plans. Provides health care services to patients under direction and responsibility of a Physician. Provides urgent and emergency care as part of a health care team in the UMC El Paso Emergency Department. Provides patient education and counseling as well as physical assessment. May participate in teaching programs for students and residents. Clinical care is performed in the UMC EL Paso Emergency Department and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families and other clinic personnel and outside professionals. May require travel to participate in educational efforts and special programs that occur outside of normal working hours.

Major/Essential Functions:
Provides urgent and emergency care as a part of health care team in an Emergency Room setting.
Assists faculty/residents in performing procedures as needed within the scope of practice.
Works emergency department shifts as assigned. These include shifts functioning as provider at triage and urgent care ("Fast Track") shifts. Also works ED shifts during resident conferences and other special events when EM residents are not present.
Elicits detailed patient history, performs comprehensive physical examination, and appropriately documents patient history, exam findings, results of diagnostic studies, rationale for medical decisions made, interventions performed, medications administered, patient counseling, and recommended patient follow up in the medical record.
Work is performed in an emergency department setting and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other Emergency Medicine personnel and outside professionals.
Develops and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regiments, emotional problems of daily living and health maintenance.
Orders and interprets diagnostic studies including diagnostic imaging, electrocardiograms, and laboratory tests.
May render emergency medical service without supervision, pending the arrival of a responsible physician, in cases where immediate diagnosis and treatment is necessary to avoid disability or death.
Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, and wound care, and managing infection.
Writes prescriptions in accordance with approved protocols or scope of practice.
Works efficiently in teams and within the PCMH (Patient-Centered Medical Home) Model.
Ensure Joint Commission and HIPAA compliance and meets all billing regulations and requirements.
Understands and complies with institutional and departmental safety policies and procedures; attends mandatory training provided and requested by TTUHSC.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from a Physician Assistant's training program approved by the Council on Allied Health Education Accreditation of the American Medical Association.
Current Physician Assistant license in the State of Texas or ability to transfer the license to Texas.
Certification as a Physician Assistant as evidenced by passing the examinations given by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants. OR
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a nurse practitioner from an approved certification program recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing.
Current R.N. license as approved by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer the license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner from an approved certification program as recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer certification to Texas.
