Air Force Materiel Command AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC in Edwards AFB, California

Summary About the position: This position will be assigned to the Auto Hobby Center, Located on Edwards AFB. Must have experience in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline powered engines. Responsibilities Provides instructions to patrons, as required, or as deemed appropriate, and on a regular and recurring basis, performs such duties as: troubleshooting, rebuilding, and repairing automotive engines, major assemblies, and components. Utilizes test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, compression gauges, exhaust electrical test stands, electrical testers, special feeler and dial gauges, exhaust and analyzers, engine, and chassis dynamometers. Troubleshoots defects, diagnosis malfunction, and determines type and extent of repair(s) necessary. Tears down, rebuilds, or replace complex components, such as engines, transmissions, differentials, axle assemblies, power steering mechanisms, braking systems, cooling systems, wheels and bearings, and hydraulic and electrical systems. Aligns, meshes, and connects repaired units to related mechanisms and effects adjustments according to manufacturers' specifications. Hooks up fuel, oil, hydraulic, and electrical systems to repaired units and adjustments to assure proper operation of units. Maintains order in the facility; enforces applicable fire, safety, and good housekeeping rules and regulations. Performs cleanup duties as required. Keeps tools and equipment in good condition by periodic and preventative maintenance. Recommends replacement/repair and/or acquisition of tools and equipment. Supervisor makes overall assignments and is available for administrative advice and guidance. Performs mechanical and associated duties without technical supervision. Follows established guidelines and technical manuals in performance of work. Knowledge of the makeup, operation, and installation of complex major systems and assemblies to troubleshoot and repair a variety of systems or to rebuild one or more systems. Ability to test, troubleshoot components and systems to locate equipment defects. Ability to interpret and apply manufacturers' repair manuals and technical specifications, schematics and engineering drawings, diagnostic codes, computer printouts, and safety manuals. Ability to operate electronic test equipment. Requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and working tight spaces. Frequently lifts, handles, and carrier parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally move moderately heavy items with assistance or with mechanical devices, including objects weighing up to or over 50 pounds. Work is performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally performs work outside under adverse weather conditions. Constantly exposed to dirt, dust, grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Qualifying Experience: Must have experience in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline powered engines which included the full range of repairing, dissembling, troubleshooting and overhauling of these engines, and provided all of the following: Knowledge of the makeup, operation, and installation of complex major systems and assemblies to troubleshoot and repair a variety of systems or to rebuild one or more systems; knowledge to rest and troubleshoot components and systems to locate equipment defect; ability to interpret and apply manufacturer's repair manuals and technical specifications, schematics and engineering drawings, diagnostics codes, computer printouts, and safety manuals; and the ability to operate electronic test equipment. Must be able to frequently lift, and carry objects weighting up to 40 pounds, and occasionally, objects weighing over 50 pounds. Frequently stands, bends, stoops, crawls, and works in tight spaces. Satisfactorily completion of pre-employment physical is required. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) Maintains professional customer service. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing. Regularly keeps supervisor informed of progress and advises supervisor of an significant developments that may impact workload. Adheres to all fire and safety standards, regulations, policies and procedures. Performs assigned duties and tasks in a timely manner and cleans tools and work environment. Operates tools in a safe manner, applying established safety regulations to minimize minor violations and to avoid major violations due to employee error or negligence. While using equipment wears applicable safety gear. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
