Role Summary

Reporting to the HSE Manager, the HSE Advisor is an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and a technically sound practitioner supporting the Security Services division in executing the organization's health, safety, and environmental management system intended to protect the organization's employees, the environment, and property against harm or damage. This role is a project-based role and will involve travelling to and working on various job sites in Western Canada. This person must consistently convey mature professional judgement, provide mentorship and guidance to employees and subcontractors, build strong relationships with the divisional team and clients and be able to work in a setting with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate has post-secondary education in OH&S combined with a broad background in security services leadership in an industrial field environment.


  • Drive and promote the Backwoods’ mission and culture.

  • Support Corporate HSE in the development, revisions, and implementation of Corporate and Divisional HSE Programs, Procedures and Practices.

  • Proactively coach workers in the various facets of safety performance and leads by example.

  • Visits assigned projects weekly, if not assigned full-time to a project.

  • Participate in weekly Corporate HSE Meetings.

  • Develop and implement project/site specific plans and training requirements for Security Division Projects.

  • Provide support and assistance to employees on completing training, document reviews, and form completion in Backwoods Online HSE Management System.

  • Exchange’s ideas and information, both orally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner and contributes meaningfully to group efforts by offering relevant ideas and knowledge. Provides quality and timely information to Divisional and HSE manager when requested.

  • Developing and implementing, or assessing and strengthening, risk assessments, safety and security management plans, JSA’s, and SWP’s for security.

  • Support employees through Backwoods Modified Work Program.

  • Track, monitor and report Security Services compliance to established HSE performance metrics.

  • Complete client required HSE Statistic reports within specified timeframe.

  • Participate in Toolbox Talks and/or safety meetings on Projects.

  • Communicate relevant HSE information to supervisors and divisional leadership.

  • Actively engage in coaching on FLHAs and HSE processes with employees and supervisors.

  • Document, track and monitor (the implementation and effectiveness of) corrective actions in Backwoods Online HSE Management System.

  • Respond to HSE issues related to Security Division projects.

  • Flash report and investigate incidents associated with Security Division projects.

  • Communicate HSE issues and/or concerns to Divisional Leadership and the HSE Manager.

  • Track, monitor, and investigate trends and high-risk Hazard IDs within the Divisions.

  • Schedule and facilitate HSE project planning activities with Project Leadership and verify project planning action items are completed within the specified timelines.

  • Support in the development, periodic reviews and revisions to Job Hazard Assessments associated with the positions and projects within the Divisions.

  • Audit project compliance to Backwoods and Project HSE requirements - communicate non-compliance to Project and Divisional Leadership.

  • Liaise with clients on HSE matters related to Security Division projects.

  • Conduct worksite and focused inspections as per established KPI targets for the Security Division.

  • Verify subcontractors working for the Security Division are managed following Backwoods Subcontractor Management Program.

  • Provide additional project admin support (as required), and

  • Additional and alternative duties that may be changed from time-to-time by the Employer.


  • 5+ years’ experience in HSE and security supervisor experience is considered an asset.

  • Degree, Diploma or Certificate in OH&S and/or related education or equivalencies.

  • Must hold a valid Alberta security guard license and be in good standing.

  • Formal Vehicle Accident Reconstruction training is considered an asset.

  • The ability to work effectively in cross-cultural settings with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Must possess a valid clean driver’s license.

  • HSE Advisor documentation meets the Project Leadership and HSE Manager’s quality, timeliness and content expectations

  • KPI expectations as outlined for HSE Advisors are met

  • Project and Divisional Audits consistently identify compliance to the HSE Management System

  • Overall satisfaction of HSE Manager and internal clients
