About this Position

The Permit Tech II accepts applications for permits from contractors, architects, and the public. This role acts as the gatekeeper for all permitting done within the Department of Building and Safety, and they are also responsible for answering telephone calls and providing information regarding permit submittals. This job requires a lot of attention to detail and organization.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and ensure the compliance of permit submittals
  • Answer telephone inquiries regarding permit requirements, submittal status, inspection results, zoning & building code ordinances, and fees
  • Conduct reviews to ensure compliance of permits
  • Provide general technical support to all plan reviewers and building inspection staff
  • Process applications, forms, and other documentation and ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Assist the commercial plan review team with completion of documents and processing of commercial building permits
  • Create, maintain, and update departmental database
  • Perform customer service functions in person, by telephone, and by mail
  • Receive monies, record transactions, issue receipts, and post payments into the computer
  • Process incoming permits and distribute to appropriate personnel
  • Post/update departmental information on the City/departmental web page, bulletin boards, and other locations

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

  • 3 years of related experience and/or training in building, construction, ore a related field

    • Orequivalent combination of education and experience
  • One (1) year of experience reviewing blueprints

  • Have or obtain within six (6) months of hire, certification as an International Code Council Permit Technician

  • Have or obtain within two (2) years of hire, certification as an International Code Council Residential Plan Reviewer

    Valid Oklahoma Driver\'s License and a driving record acceptable to the City\'s insurance carrier

Necessary Skills

  • Strong mathematical ability
  • Strong customer service/interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to understand and utilize a wide variety of resources such as the International Residential Code and City of Edmond Ordinances
  • Ability to read plot plans and site plans of residential and commercial projects
  • Ability to exercise judgement, decisiveness, and creativity
  • Knowledge of basic construction codes and ordinances
  • Ability to meet the required physical standards for this position
  • Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug and audio screenings
