The Optum Health Healthcare Economics team leads and influences decision making for the Optum Health line of business. As the Healthcare Economics Consultant, you will be challenged to provide data-driven answers to the toughest problems facing the Optum Health line of business. This position is responsible for researching and investigating key business problems through quantitative analyses of utilization and healthcare cost data. The successful candidate will build and manipulate complex claims datasets to identify and investigate root causes of medical trends and potential areas for medical expense improvements. The Healthcare Economics Consultant will drive innovation by creating flexible, Excel-based models to support the ongoing identification of trend drivers and affordability opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Identify, analyze, and explain medical trends using claims-based analyses

• Perform data analytics in support of medical expense insights, clinical initiatives, and affordability program development and validation

• Apply strong critical thinking and listening skills to anticipate questions from key stakeholders and consider all aspects of an analysis before completion

• Research healthcare topics and incorporate findings into data analyses

• Use SAS/SQL to construct claims-based datasets

• Construct polished MS Excel models to satisfy analytical requests

• Provide consistent, timely, and meaningful communications to requestors on project status, results, and conclusions from analyses

Required Qualifications:

• 2+ years of applicable corporate experience in data analytics – examining and summarizing data to uncover insights

• SAS/SQL experience

• Intermediate proficiency with MS Excel (practical experience working with pivot tables, advanced formulas, graphs, vlookups)

• Team oriented and motivated to collaborate

• Solid attention to detail and accuracy

• Proactive problem-solving abilities

• Solid verbal and written communications skills, including ability to present ideas and concepts effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Math, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics

• Healthcare claims analytics experience

• Experience with multiple healthcare data types (medical claims, membership, provider, pharmacy, authorization, capitation)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
