Position Summary

Basic Function:

Oversees, plans, implements, and monitors the activities of the Religious, Spiritual, and Secular Support and Services program within the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Department in the Division of Student Life and Engagement (SLE). Ensures the development of educational programs and activities are supported to offer a positive environment for students and their families on or off campus. Consults, advises, and refers the MSU students, their families, and the community to resources available to students in their quest to graduate and beyond graduation.

Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the development and implementation of co-curricular educational programs and services that complement and supplement the academic programs of the University regarding the Religious, Spiritual, and Secular Support and Services (RSSS).

  • Plan and coordinate the University’s religious, spiritual, and secular life programming, including activities and events.

  • Effectively manages the financial, human, mental, and physical resources available for student religious, spiritual and secular activities through programs, activities, social events, and educational workshops.

  • Provides leadership and support for the development of the RSSS program that promotes understanding and appreciation for students to help support academic achievement and support students’ needs/interest.

  • Formulates and implements objectives, policies, and procedures for evaluating the RSSS program and organizational effectiveness.

  • Works closely with student organizations and programs on matters of interest for all students at the University.

  • Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates the staff for the RSSS program and services.

  • Development, training, and presentation of resources offered within RSSS program for units/departments, their staff, and the public.

  • Research, design, develop and communicate in areas of current social issues that affect the student’s academic success in areas of religious, spiritual, secular, and global interest/issues.

  • Represents the Assistant Vice President on various University committees where matters of religious, spiritual, and secular beliefs are of concern.

  • Interacts and works collaboratively with Deans, Department Chairs, and other members of the University community to enhance the overall climate for students.

  • Works with various units to develop policies and procedures for student groups and to implement major University activities.

  • Develops, monitors and control RSSS program budgets, grants and records.

  • Serve on committees at the University, local, regional and national level regarding religious, spiritual, and secular topics.

  • Maintain religious, spiritual, and secular expression and growth; advance intellectual and knowledge in this field.

Communication:

  • Assistant Vice President of Student Life and Engagement for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging - to implement process and guidelines, set priorities, problem solve, share reports, data, budget analysis, and collect information.

  • Provost Office, academic administrators (including Assistant Deans), and department chairs - Serve on committees, consult on or plan programs and activities.

  • University staff/departments - to plan, consult, problem solve and share information, and plan programs.

  • Support staff - to provide direction, assist with problems, reports, resources and financial requests/allocations.

  • Student Organizations - to provide advice, share information regarding academic governance matters and issues.

  • Public - to provide information and relay resources available to students, families, and veteran associations.

Responsibility for the Work of Others:

May provide first or second level supervision over regular employees and first level supervision over student employees.

Responsibility for the Health and Safety of Others:

Student Life and Engagement staff are responsible for the physical, mental, social, and academic development of a student’s success at the University and is responsible for reporting any concerns in these areas to the appropriate office/department to receive necessary assistance.

Impacts on Programs/Services/Operations:

Failure to effectively direct the program activities and poor communication with other key units regarding student activities could result in ineffective and conflicting programs and negative reactions to the Division.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Student Affairs Administration, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology or Counselor Education; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in developing and implementing programs, policies and procedures and supervising and coordinating staff; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

At least five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in student affairs programs and services, an understanding of the formal and informal organizational structures, academic governance procedures, and informal organization structures specific to the university, computer technology, training and development programs, designing and developing research projects and in supervising staff and office operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Previous Seminary, Spirituality, or Social Justice experience.
