Position Summary

This is a 12-month, 90% teaching and 10% service position. The Academic Specialist will teach in-person core courses with an expected load of three courses per semester and with possible opportunities for specialized courses depending on expertise. Current program needs include planning practice, introductory planning history and theory and planning sustainability courses. Summer online teaching is possible. The person will teach some undergraduate courses that are large classes with seats of more than 100. The person will also assist with program needs and priorities such as student recruitment activities, student support, curriculum assessments, etc.

Required Degree

Masters -Urban and Regional Planning from a U.S.

Minimum Requirements

A master's degree in urban and regional planning from a U.S. Accredited Planning Program, 1-3 years’ experience in instruction and working with students, and a minimum of seven years of professional planning practice in the U.S. is required;or a Ph.D. in Urban Planning (or allied discipline) is required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent public speaking ability are needed.

Desired Qualifications

A Ph.D., preferably in Urban Planning from an accredited U.S. university. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification, on-line teaching experience and expertise teaching large classes preferred. Practical professional planning experience is desired.

We offer a Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning (BSURP), a Master of Urban and Regional planning (MURP) and a Ph.D. in Planning, Design and Construction. The Urban and Regional Planning Program is STEM designated at Michigan State University.
