Michigan State University(MSU) Specialist - Teacher-Fixed Term in East Lansing, Michigan

Position Summary

Michigan State University, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, invites applications for a three-year fixed-term teaching specialist position in civil engineering beginning August 16, 2023. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching structural design and analysis courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels in civil engineering. The primary duties of this position are teaching and service. The teaching and service requirements will be consistent with department policies.

The candidate must have an M.S. or higher degree in civil engineering and 2 to 4 years of industry and/or academic experience. The candidate must be able to teach undergraduate level courses in statics, surveying, structural design and analysis, and graduate level courses in structural engineering, including bridge design, seismic design, advanced design of reinforced concrete structures, and steel structures. The candidate must be able to effectively communicate with students and manage classes with different sizes.

Minimum Requirements
  • Applicants must have a MS degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Applicants must have more than 2 years of teaching experience in engineering
  • Applicants must have strong oral and written communication skills
  • Applicants are expected to work well in a team setting and be highly self-motivated
  • Applicants must have experience in class settings of different sizes
Desired Qualifications
  • Ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on structural and with survey experience.

Department Statement

Civil and Environmental engineering is organized to create a welcoming/inclusive campus community for students by collaborating with faculty, staff and students to develop programs and resources that will support curricular and co-curricular success and to prepare students to succeed academically and professionally.

The CEE Department is centered around civil engineering and environmental engineering degree programs. Some specialized disciplines include structures, pavements, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, water resources, and energy/sustainability. The department currently has 28 tenure-system faculty members, with approximately 700 undergraduate and 145 graduate students. Degrees are offered at BS, MS, and PhD levels.
