Position Summary

The Writing Center at Michigan State University is seeking a full-time Specialist – Curriculum. This position is a two-year, annual year position (12 months) in the Academic Specialist system beginning June 3, 2024 or earlier depending upon availability, with the possibility of renewal.

The chosen candidate will join the Writing Center’s leadership team and lead curriculum initiatives, teach one course a semester, and contribute to research through the new Writing Center Research Lab.

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Writing Center across multiple locations (e.g. scheduling, conducting observations, mentoring graduate assistants and staff, etc.)

  • Lead the Center’s curriculum-related initiatives and programming including Strategies for Teaching Across Fields (STAF), faculty consultations, workshop facilitator training, consultant professional development, and others.

  • Support several of the Writing Center’s internal committees that aim to enhance various aspects of the Center's mission, such as fostering assessment practices, grant writing, etc.

  • Develop new initiatives and partnerships related to Tier II writing (WAC/WID)

  • Collaborate with and mentor the Center’s consultants and staff in research initiatives through the Writing Center Research Lab and engage with writing center organizations (e.g. East Central Writing Centers Association, International Writing Centers Association, etc.)

  • Teach one course each semester related to the Writing Center’s mission (e.g. Writing Center Theory and Practice, First-Year Writing, special topics in writing, etc.)

Required Degree

Masters -Rhetoric/Composition, English, English education, higher education administration, or a related field

Desired Degree

Doctorate -Rhetoric/Composition, English, English education, higher education administration, or a related field

Minimum Requirements

MA in Rhetoric/Composition, English, English education, higher education administration, or a related field (PhD preferred); knowledge of current writing/writing center theory; administrative background in a writing center and/or writing program; experience teaching writing; experience with curriculum development and assessment.

Desired Qualifications

Doctorate in Rhetoric/Composition, English, English education, higher education administration, or a related field.
