Position Summary

The Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University is seeking applicants an academic advisor (12-month, 100% time, fixed-term). This position is initially for one year, renewable annually based on performance and funding.

The successful candidate will work with a team of advisors in the College’s office of Undergraduate Academic Services (UAS) to provide academic advising services to prospective students, undergraduate business-preference, and business students (domestic and international) including academic program planning, education abroad, career pathway to major alignment, student engagement referrals, and related topics. Responsibilities will also include participation in the development and implementation of activities/projects related to recruitment and student success; attending meetings at the department, college, and university level; participating in all New Student Orientation (NSO); degree clearance; and may include facilitation of a one-credit freshman seminar emphasizing business major and career exploration. (100%)

UAS advisors can expect to complement their day-to-day academic advising role with retention and success administrative lead responsibilities. UAS distributes unit responsibilities based on advisor interest, strengths, and professional development opportunities. These responsibilities may include lead administration & communication for Broad majors/minors, programming, admissions support, commencement, and other projects or initiatives.

The position will interface regularly with faculty and academic professionals throughout the College and across campus.

UAS supports and encourages a flex schedule which incorporates day/time flexibility as well as work from home opportunities. Greater than 50% of this position will require onsite work responsibilities. Flex schedules are coordinated amongst the team each semester and are expected to be predictable and reliable.

The minimum salary for an academic specialist-advisor position is $57,200. Consideration will be given for years of academic advising experience and educational credentials. Every effort will be made to provide a competitive salary that is equitable amongst the UAS advising team.

Minimum Requirements

A well prepared candidate will demonstrate:

  • Formal work experience in supporting undergraduate students in an advising or comparable capacity (this may include internship or practicum experience).

  • Must be able to interpret and implement academic policies and procedures.

  • Excellent communication (spoken and written), organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills required.

  • Cross-cultural understanding/sensitivity and commitment to diversity.

  • Must be able to maintain positive relationships with multiple stakeholders.

  • Commitment to helping others, tolerance for ambiguity, and sense of perspective.

  • High personal accountability.

  • Demonstrated competency in the use of current technology including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and Zoom.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, communication, or business.

  • Familiarity with MSU’s software and advising systems (Campus Solutions, ESAF, Desire2Learn).

  • Facilitation or teaching experience.
