Position Summary

The Milbrath lab at Michigan State University is searching for a postdoctoral researcher in Entomology. The lab has a strong focus on the land grant identity and of responding to stakeholder priorities by performing research with practical applications.

Duties include exploring how M. plutonius persists in certain environments and factors that trigger honey bee colony disease. These data will pair with molecular detection and genomic analysis work to test and predict efficacy and efficiency of various treatment and disinfection regimes for European foulbrood. The postdoc will be expected to design and perform laboratory microbial experiments, and perform the related data analysis, as well as partnering with technicians to carry out in-hive and in-vitro experiments. The postdoc will collaborate with researchers at MSU and other institutions to identify current knowledge gaps and participate in experimental design, data collection, data analysis, grant and report writing, and publication.

The postdoc will be expected to publish peer-reviewed publications from this work, meaningfully contribute to additional peer-reviewed publications, and expected to take a leadership role in the lab including mentorship of graduate and undergraduate researchers, involvement in lab research projects, coordination of lab meetings, and leadership of lab-generated publications.

This position may require some travel to stakeholder meetings and to present research findings at regional an/or nation conferences.

Anticipated start date: summer 2024.

This is a full-time position for 1 year from the date of hire, with possible extension(s) up to 3 years contingent on performance and funding availability.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Microbiology, biology, entomology or oth

Minimum Requirements

Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrable experience in statistical analysis of large datasets.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in basic microbiological techniques including media preparation and bacterial isolation and microscopic identification, as well as antimicrobial susceptibility assays.

  • Experience in performing and interpreting various molecular techniques such as PCR, qPCR, vPCR, DNA extraction and purification and gel electrophoresis.

  • Familiarity with biosafety and quality control standards and regulations for working with micro-organisms in a BSL-2 laboratory.

  • Experience in statistical analysis of large datasets. The selected individual must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of appointment.
