Position Summary
The Department of Animal Sciences at Michigan State University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work on the quantitative genetics of feed efficiency, including the use of data from sensors to predict feed intakes on individual cows. A major focus of this position will be to help collate data from multiple project collaborators and help develop statistical and data mining tools to improve the accuracy of genomic predictions of feed efficiency in US dairy cattle and to help farms make culling decisions to improve feed efficiency. The position is initially for one year renewable annually contingent on performance and availability of funding. The starting date is flexible but preferably shortly after March 1, 2022. Review of applications will start immediately, and the position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. Salary is commensurate with experience plus benefits.

Specific Position Duties
Research (100%)
Work with large heterogeneous datasets deriving from multiple collaborators.
Develop methods and computer programs to conduct data analyses
Regularly discuss research ideas and analyses with collaborators
Have the primary responsibility for writing scientific publications.
Present results at national and international scientific meetings
Write grant applications to major funding agencies

Required Degree
Doctorate -animal Breeding and Genetics, Statistics
Minimum Requirements
PhD in relevant scientific area including Animal Breeding and Genetics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Data Science or related area.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in computer programming, particularly R and C or C++ or FORTRAN with the ability to communicate with databases and to handle large data files.
A strong record of achievement as demonstrated by journal publications.
Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise with industry
High level of understanding of quantitative genetics and its role in animal improvement programs.
Ability to work independently but also as a team player
A strong work ethic and a commitment to becoming an independent scientist
Excellent skills in scientific writing
