Michigan State University is one of the top institutions for research in microbial ecology and evolution. One position for a post-doctoral Research Associate is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ashley Shade (https://ashley17061.wixsite.com/shadelab). The Shade lab is affiliated with the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (https://mmg.natsci.msu.edu/) and the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences (https://www.canr.msu.edu/psm/).
We seek an excellent post-doctoral associate to conduct research to understand microbiome structure and activity in thawing permafrost, in support of a new collaborative National Science Foundation award. Applicants should hold a PhD in a field related to microbial sciences, soil sciences, bioinformatics/genomics, ecology/evolution or related field. The project will focus on the analysis of metagenome and metatranscriptome data from thawing permafrost samples from a field experiment, and will integrate ecological statistics for quantifying mechanisms that drive microbiome response after thawing. The successful applicant will join a multi-institutional team (R Mackelprang lab at California State University Northridge and R Spencer lab at Florida State University) and receive high-quality individualized mentoring and professional development opportunities according to their career goals.
The successful applicant will be independent and have excellent time management skills, and be willing to take leadership roles as part of a collaborative team. They will have strong writing and communication skills. The position salary will be commensurate with years of post-doctoral experience and will follow NIH post-doctoral salary guidelines, and will include the standard Michigan State University benefits package. This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term position with reappointment contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding. The expected start date will be the Summer of 2022.

Applicants should hold a PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, ecology, bioinformatics, soil sciences, or other similar field of study.
Demonstrated experience with bioinformatic and statistical analyses of microbiome untargeted metagenome sequence data is required. The successful applicant will be proficient in using standard bioinformatic tools for metagenome analysis, and in writing and executing code in the R language for statistical computing. They will have knowledge or direct experience with GitHub/version control, and either experience with or willingness to learn job submission to a high-performance compute cluster. Additional demonstrated experience in analyzing metatranscriptome data and/or amplicon data will be viewed favorably.
