Position Summary

The MSU-DOE Plant Research Lab is a world class research center for the study of photosynthetic organisms. The Kerfeld lab (www.kerfeldlab.org) is structurally characterizing the light harvesting antenna and photoprotective proteins of cyanobacteria. In addition to a fundamental understanding of light energy capture and transfer, this work has implications for engineering natural and artificial photosynthesis. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be involved in the isolation and structural characterization of light-harvesting and photoprotective proteins. In addition to cryo-EM, the Postdoctoral Scholar will have the opportunity apply other structural biology methods including SAXS and X-ray footprinting.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Biochemistry or related field

Minimum Requirements

Experience in protein purification essential. Demonstration of a strong publication record and experience working with proteins.

Desired Qualifications

Structural Biology experience is a bonus. Computational expertise is also a bonus.

Department Statement

Cryo-EM facilities available at MSU

Michigan State University houses a number of state of the art core facilities under the umbrella of the “Research Technology Support Facility” including a modern cryo-EM suite (https://cryo-em.natsci.msu.edu/about/index.aspx). This includes a Talos Arctica outfitted with an autoloader, Falcon4i direct detector and a Selectris energy filter. A Titan Krios G4 with cold FEG, Falcon 4i and SelectrisX energy filter equipped with a micro-ED package will be installed this summer. In addition, we will be installing a Helios Hydra FIB-SEM instrument this summer as well. Cryo-EM or other structural biology method experience is helpful, but not necessary. Training opportunities for all aspects of grid preparation, sample imaging, and post imaging analysis are available.
