Position Summary

The Quantitative Fisheries Center (QFC) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to develop and apply hierarchical growth models fit by maximum likelihood using RTMB to a range of Great Lakes fish species, to ascertain how individual fish vary in their growth. The research associate will also conduct simulations to evaluate the population and fishery consequences of among-individual variation in growth. The successful candidate will also participate in other QFC activities, and in particular provide help on consulting requests from the QFCs partners, and participate in QFC seminars and staff meetings. The research associate will be expected to communicate scholarship through professional presentations and will work to prepare results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Fisheries or a closely related discipline

Minimum Requirements

Candidate’s Ph.D work should be in fisheries or a closely related discipline. The candidate should have evidence of prior productive research in the area of quantitative fisheries, evidenced by publications in journals and/or presentations at scientific conferences.

Desired Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in fish growth and fish population modeling both in terms of estimation and simulation modeling, strong computer programming skills in R, strong background in statistical modeling applied in a fisheries context, and excellent communication skills.

The Quantitative Fisheries Center seeks to provide a research, outreach/service, and teaching program to build greater capacity within fishery management agencies in quantitative methods; improve quantitative methods for assessing fish stocks; assist agencies to use model-based approaches in decision making; develop a better understanding of fish community and population dynamics.
