Position Summary

Michigan State University Department of Anthropology in the College of Social Science invites applications for a tenure-system position in archaeology at the assistant or associate professor level. The appointment will begin August 16, 2024. We seek an anthropological archaeologist specializing in Environmental Archaeology. While the geographic area of specialization is open, priority will be given to those candidates whose work is in the Midwest or Great Lakes region. Applicant’s research should enhance or compliment the second archaeological program research theme: Heritage, Preservation, and Community Engagement. Applicants should have an active field program, the ability to organize and lead an archaeological fieldschool, and the ability to train undergraduates and graduate students in collections analysis or lab-based methods.

Successful applicants will have appropriate research background, skills, and training to interact effectively with other disciplines across issues of human-environment interactions. These skills may involve multidisciplinary training in related fields including specialized laboratory analysis, computational and data-science methods, or geospatial analysis and remote sensing.

Michigan State University is a R1 institution and applicants are expected to have a demonstrated record of high impact peer reviewed publication and competitive external funding for research. University teaching experience, while not required, will greatly strengthen the application.

The department/school is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from a diverse background and demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for all students.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Anthropology

Minimum Requirements

• A Ph.D. in Anthropology completed by the date of hire

• Demonstrated experience in the method, theory, and practice of Environmental Archaeology

• Potential for high impact peer-reviewed publication and competitive external funding for research

• Potential for or demonstrated evidence of high-quality instruction and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels

The Department of Anthropology is a highly interconnected, diverse, theoretically engaged and practice-oriented research and teaching program at Michigan State University, the nation’s leading land grant institution. In the Department of Anthropology at Michigan State University, we believe that the strength and vitality of our discipline lies in our ability to approach fundamental issues concerning cultural and biological diversity from multiple perspectives, rather than the achievement of consensus. Our faculty specializes in sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, medical anthropology, biological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. However, many of the research themes we address cross these areas of sub-disciplinary specialization, and our research and teaching benefit from consideration of the multiple vantage points we bring to bear on these themes.

The archaeology program in the Department of Anthropology has two signature research areas: Environmental Archaeology; and Heritage, Preservation, & Community Engagement. Our focus across the two signature research areas is both theoretical and applied, and we seek to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across the archaeological and heritage community.
