BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY Performs entry-level to routine (journey-level) vocational nursing work for the Texas ChalleNGe Academy (TCA). Work involves providing for the care, treatment, and general welfare of the cadets. Reports directly to the Program Nurse and works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Administers medication orally, internally, or by injection. Monitors cadets for treatments and procedures. Prepares and ma ntains cadet medical records and reports, and reviews documentation for completeness. Assists in preparing and delivering in-service training and educational programs for the health care team and TCA staff as necessary. Provides authorized medical services, to include administering prescribed and authorized over-the counter medications to cadets. May accompany and transports cadets to medical appointments at local clinics. Coordinates the scheduling of medical appointments at local clinics when necessary. Provides medical support for a high level of Volunteer Community Service projects that expose cadets to minor injuries and allergy reactions. Monitors and charts cadets weight, diet, feeding problems, and vital signs; documents and records results. Conducts urinalysis and prepares specimens to ship to laboratory. Assists in preparing and delivering training for cadets with specific health goals concerning therapeutic regimens, growth and development information, family planning and health and safety awareness. Conducts appropriate screening tests to assess cadets heath by interviewing cadets, performing physical evaluations and obtaining and updating cadets medical history, as necessary. Applies principles and practices to assess, prevent, and control disease. Prepares cadets for tests, therapy, or treatments. Participates in conducting therapeutic treatments. Conducts and orders inventory of medical supplies and instruments. Communicates with essential staff regarding restrictions, limitations and dispensing of medications, as required. Attends relevant training to maintain the essential functions of the position. Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies procedures handbook. May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters, and other missions, to include holidays and weekends. Performs related work as assigned. Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: Graduation from an approved vocational or practical nursing education program is required. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Associates degree in nursing is preferred. EXPERIENCE: Nursing experience is required. Experience using Microsoft Office applications (such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook) is required. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Nursing experience in a school-aged program or Youth Challenge program environment is preferred. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred. REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE: Must be licensed as a Licensed Vocational Nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact. Must hold and maintain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification or have the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. A valid CPR/First Aid Instructor certification is preferred at the time of hire or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. HIPAA certification is required, or ability to obtain such certification within 90 days of hire. Valid drivers license is required. *If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
