We are currently seeking a Cost Accountant to join our Accounting Team
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Cost Accounting role will work closely with the VP of Contracting in supporting the Construction and Contracting division with a focus on collecting/analyzing data about the company’s individual job performances. This role will have a dotted line reporting relationship with the Operations Controller. This position will require the role to spend time with our operations management team, business processes, systems, and intricacies of job costing. The Cost Accountant will be responsible for providing accurate, concise, and clear analytics/recommendations that support management decisions. Support will include daily, weekly and monthly operating metrics, analysis of operating costs, variances to operating plan, development of procedures designed to optimize operating efficiencies and control costs, evaluation of capital investments, analysis of opportunities for manufacturing cost and process improvement and accurate forecasting reporting back to Corporate. Additional duties include month end close with prepared financials, journal entries and analytics to ensure the business unit is on plan.
Maintain, understand, document and record all facets of the cost accounting system, including cost drivers and look for efficiencies within the organization.
Analyze and verify costs and cost savings.
Work with Contracting on Bid to Win and compare performance of bids versus actual costs (How did we perform versus actual bids vs projections)
Analyze any changes to materials in order to determine what effect it has on the cost.
Analyze manufacturing costs and prepare regular reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs.
Make estimates of new and proposed product costs.
Assist in preparing the budget, forecast and month end close.
Responsible for maintaining contracting backlog.
Provide management with reports that specify and compare factors that affect prices and profitability of products or services.
Assist in audits and general ledger preparation.
Understands and reports operational statistics and metrics for major operating units.
Performs monthly analysis of the major drivers for operations such as labor hours and expenses, raw materials cost, repairs and maintenance, utilities and depreciation. The Cost Accountant will analyze the prior period trends and forward estimates to determine the impact on the company.
Provide financial expertise, including decision support and analysis for operations.
Becomes proficient in the customer sales pricing process and prepares customer profitability analysis on monthly, quarterly, and as needed basis. This will involve gaining a complete understanding of the company’s operating costs and the quote to cash system as it relates to the sales and financial components of the software.
Prepares and presents quarterly business review presentations of financial performance for management.
Performs capital analyses calculating the ROI, payback, and the overall impact of capital projects.
Works with operations personnel to assist in the preparation of budgets, capital expenditure requests, forecast revisions, and ongoing operational decision making within a financial context.
Plans, conducts, and reconciles the physical inventory for operations.
Maintains integrity of inventory costing and ensures proper inventory valuations.
Gains an in-depth knowledge of the company’s operating functions through periodic and regular plant, site, and/or job visits as necessary to better understand the macro picture of the company’s operations. As a result, the Cost Analyst is better able to provide relevant accounting and financial insight as needed.
Gains a thorough knowledge of the company’s budgeting, forecasting, and costing systems, models, and projections and provides significant input in these processes.
Audits field and office processes to ensure efficiencies and accuracy. Recommends and undertakes process improvements as directed.
Assists the Corporate and Financial Controllers with technical accounting issues.
Performs routine month and quarter end accounting journals and reconciliations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common financial statements and technical journals
Demonstrated use of business software including ERP systems and Microsoft Office. Need to have a strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel
In-depth understanding of relational databases with a demonstrated ability to design queries and/or reports using ODBC, Crystal Reports, etc.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and delegate assignments
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions
Good written and oral communication skills
Ability to respond to common inquiries from, and effectively present information to, management, customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
Attention to detail and ability to effectively communicate
Required Education/Experiences
Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or related field required, with a CPA or CMA certification preferred but not required. Four (4) to Seven (7) years of experience in finance, accounting or related field required. Experience in a manufacturing or construction field preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Active NC Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certificate - preferred but not required
Current North Carolina Driver’s License required
