Hourly Rate: $16.24

Work Times/Days: Various shifts between hours of Monday - Friday 5:30 am – 8:30 pm; Saturdays 7:30 am – 5:30 pm; Sundays 12:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Position is responsible for assisting participants in a variety of aquatic recreation activities. The incumbent applies judgment and knowledge of program parameters to monitor and direct equipment usage and ensure adherence to safety requirements. Tasks may also include performing pool and bathhouse maintenance, assisting with service to patrons, and related jobs which are beneficial to the pool and swimming programs.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Monitors and controls participants of diverse age groups, skill levels and abilities.

  • Learns and enforces safety rules, mitigating disruptive behavior as needed and maintaining control of equipment.

  • Maintains, organizes, compiles, checks, stocks and replaces inventory, delivers necessary supplies and materials.

  • Performs general housekeeping duties including cleaning, sanitizing, and removing trash and debris.

  • Performs duties of opening and closing as assigned from the designated facility checklist.

  • Participates in in-service training, orientations, and other staff meetings as requested.

  • Provides excellent internal and external customer service, creating a positive experience for patrons through professional and courteous behavior.

  • Learns and develops aquatic skills necessary to take the role as a Certified Lifeguard and/or Water Safety Instructor.

  • Practices training materials including classroom, group discussion, hands-on skills development, and written testing related to roles and responsibilities of a Lifeguard and/or Water Safety Instructor.

  • Incumbent is intended to successfully complete the Lifeguard and/or Water Safety Instructor training program within the first year of employment and receive a certification of completion, at which point they will be eligible to apply for available positions.

    KNOWLEDGE OF:

    -Customer service principles.

    -Basic safety principles for pool environments.

    SKILL IN:

    -Communicating instructions effectively to individuals and groups.

    -Managing disruptive behavior.

    -For Lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor Trainee assignments, basic water competency that is equivalent to Level 3 of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Requires the ability to read, write and follow directions.

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Comfortable swimming in water up to 9 and half feet.

  • Interested in pursuing a certification in teaching swimming skills and/or in lifesaving skills.

  • Comfortable communicating through phone calls, text messages, and emails.
