Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Summer Safety Intern to join our Health and Safety team. This position offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, focusing on safety management, compliance, and workplace hazard prevention. The intern will work closely with the Safety Manager and other team members to assist in maintaining a safe work environment and promoting a strong safety culture.

This is a fully onsite role at our Durant, OK location.

Primary Duties

  • Develop and create New Hire Orientation material: Review current training material and develop a comprehensive new hire orientation program that elevates the company's onboarding experience.

  • Assist with Safety Audits and Inspections: Participate in site safety inspections, hazard assessments, and audits to identify potential risks and ensure compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies.

  • Data Collection and Reporting: Help collect, analyze, and report safety data, including incidents, near misses, and safety observations. Prepare presentations and reports summarizing safety performance metrics.

  • Support Safety Training Programs: Assist in the development and delivery of safety training sessions, toolbox talks, and orientations for employees. Ensure training materials are up-to-date and accessible.

  • Review and Update Safety Policies: Support the review and revision of company safety policies, procedures, and practices to ensure they meet federal, state, and local safety regulations.

  • Incident Investigations: Assist in investigating workplace incidents and near misses, including identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.

  • Hazard Communication: Help maintain safety data sheets (SDS), and ensure that hazard communication labels and signage are current and clearly visible in the workplace.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Management: Monitor and assess the use of PPE throughout the facility, ensuring proper usage and compliance.

  • Ergonomics Assessment: Assist in ergonomic evaluations and propose solutions to reduce workplace injury risks related to repetitive tasks, heavy lifting, or improper workstation setup.

  • Support Emergency Response Plans: Help ensure that emergency response plans are current, and assist in coordinating safety drills, such as fire, spill, or evacuation drills.

  • Safety Program Promotion: Assist with initiatives to promote a positive safety culture across the organization, including creating safety bulletins, posters, and other communication materials.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience with Job Safety Analysis and Ergonomics.

  • Familiarity of OSHA, EPA, and NIOSH rules and regulations.

  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to work with contributors at all levels of management.

  • Must have excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially when important deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressures.

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; and bend. The employee is frequently required to reach, push, pull, and lift with hands and arms.

  • Physical Requirement : Capability to lift 40 pounds.

  • Working Conditions : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach, swivel, carry items from one building to another, and speak and actively listen. The noise level is usually moderate.

Education / Experience

  • Enrolled in a relevant degree program: The intern should be currently pursuing (or have completed) a degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Engineering, Public Health, Safety Management, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.

  • Basic coursework in EHS: Having completed courses in areas like environmental regulations, safety management, hazard recognition, or occupational health would be ideal.

  • Project work: Any hands-on project work from school, like hazard assessments or environmental studies, can demonstrate relevant experience
