Chemical Stockroom and Laboratory Manager

SUMMARY

The Chemistry Stockroom and Lab Manager is under the supervision of the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Computer, and Physical Science. The general responsibilities of the Chemistry Stockroom and Lab Manager are to support the programs of the Department of Chemistry, Computer, and Physical Science with the major emphasis on the freshman laboratory program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with department personnel (faculty and student-workers) with laboratory preparations (e.g., preparing solutions, setting up equipment, etc.) and lecture demonstrations (e.g. assemble and provide materials and equipment needed.)
  • Coordinate lab space, equipment, and undergraduate teaching assistance for Freshman teaching laboratories.
  • Order chemicals, supplies and equipment as needed or as requested by faculty, in order to maintain an appropriate inventory for routine operation of laboratories.
  • Promptly unpack and stock materials received or dispense to those who have ordered them, if applicable.
  • Promptly notify faculty that an order has arrived.
  • Work with department personnel to perform minor repairs on equipment and instruments and keep them in proper working condition.
  • Prepare, submit and monitor maintenance requests for equipment that cant be fixed in-house.
  • Put chemical and supply inventory on computer and keep it current.
  • Maintain a perpetual inventory of stockroom chemicals and supplies and inform faculty how to access database.
  • Monitor safety practices, obtain and maintain safety equipment and materials, including MSDS for chemicals including laboratory safety inspections.
  • Review, develop and implement stockroom procedures that provide easy access and procurement of chemicals and equipment.
  • Act as a consultant to the faculty concerning available safety films and other safety materials.
  • Review items on inventory for purposes of evaluation and possible liquidation of material in accordance with state and/or federal regulations.
  • Organize and maintain catalogs and supply information for departmental use.
  • Coordinate the universitys chemical waste disposal.
  • Provide support for occasional activities on the weekends such as the Science Olympiad.
  • Maintain appropriate chemical hygiene in storage areas.
