The Graphic Designer is responsible for the creation/modification of secondary and tertiary packaging artwork files for BIAH while ensuring they are accurate, following approved graphic guidelines, and are released for printing on time. The Graphic Designer will create/modify global artwork files for Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines, Nutraceuticals, OTC & Pet Healthcare products produced at Boehringer-Ingelheim sites and CMOs located in North America/Australia/New Zealand. Additional responsibilities included working with multiple BI functional groups in the production, coordination and tracking of all packaging graphic requests while understanding the requirements and following the jobs progress from creation, to proofing, to regulatory/marketing approval and to final release to print vendors. The role of Graphic Designer is to be the subject matter expert for the Artwork Management team for graphics/printing of secondary & tertiary packaging materials supporting the supply of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health products.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Product Launches:

  • Graphic Designer is responsible for all aspects of the design/artwork creation, when artwork is developed internally.

  • The process includes review of a creative brief, design concept development, and Master File creation.

  • When Marketing Managers work with outside agencies, the designer will ensure final files are received internally for: final component number assignment, technical printing review and routing for approvals.

  • The designer will create Master Files, Proof PDFs, and Print PDFs for each requested component.

  • LCM Artwork Changes: New/Modified artwork will be updated following approved processes.

  • The designer will create Master Files, Proof PDFs, and Print PDFs for each requested component.

  • The current number of PPCs (printed packaging components) managed by Duluth Artwork Management is in excess of 2600.

  • Project Team Meetings:

  • Attend all required Launch (Product Readiness) and LCM project meetings.

  • Proofing:

  • The graphic designer will use a digital proofing system and/or visually proof artwork.

  • Proofing work to ensure only the requested changes were made, to ensure the graphic file matches the government approved labeling and to review the technical aspects (size, dieline, PMS color, process colors, etc.).

  • Routing Updated Artwork:

  • Once artwork is completed and proofed, the designer will circulate artwork PDFs of all packaging components to the responsible Marketing and Regulatory Affairs colleagues for review and approval (or rejection), using email or (OnePac) Packaging Workflow tool.

  • Project Tracking:

  • Designer will track assigned projects from start to finish including: artwork creation, defining deliverables and time lines with internal customers and stakeholders, managing artwork revisions, routing and tracking of requested changes, proofing work for accuracy prior to submitting to internal customers, checking printer proofs, routing and tracking approvals and print release documents according to departmental procedures.

  • Design Guidelines:

  • The Graphic Designer is the SME for design adherence.

  • They will create packaging based on approved Stand Alone and BI Guidelines to ensure consistency throughout the product portfolio.

  • The designer will lead any design change discussions/requests between the Global Marketing representative and the Design Guideline Committee.

  • Anti-Counterfeiting:

  • The Graphic Designer is the SME for approved BIAH ACF printed techniques used on packaging.

  • The designer must also understand other covert/overt ACF techniques and the impact on packaging.

  • Communication & Coordination:

  • Be proactive and timely in communications to internal customers and stakeholders by: participating in Project teams, leading specific projects where expertise in packaging is required, providing accurate answers on specific requests (including clarification of needs, evaluation of solution, development of action plan), providing project deliverables in a timely manner.

  • Utilize project management skills with a focus on high quality customer service by: working with external Graphic Contractors, sending graphic files to print vendors, coordinating launch of printed packaging components, independently coordinating graphic development activities for multiple projects simultaneously, and send artwork to manufacturing sites and to outside suppliers as needed.

  • Artwork Release, Documentation & Reporting:

  • Designer will fill out artwork release forms for artwork release according to department processes and procedures include relevant attachments when sending files to internal/external customers/vendors, email notifications to internal/external customers/vendors.

  • Artwork deliverables can be sent out via Artwork Management Tool, email, BI-approved FTP (currently Microsoft OneDrive), or via shared drive.

  • Reporting by using both internal/external communication tools to measure activity and communicate to management.

  • GS1 & BI Coding Handbook expertise.

  • SME for all coding requirements for BI product through the different sales channels and the impact on printed packaging materials.

  • The Graphic Designer is responsible for working under internal SOPs & Guidelines.

  • Must have an understanding of Global Regulatory requirements to ensure proper approvals are received prior to artwork release.

  • Graphic Designer should maintain an understanding of the Animal Health product portfolio under our responsibility.

  • Understanding of different processes for product submission (EPA, FDA, USDA, EMEA, and OTC products).

  • Must be able to complete complex projects from several different sources, with competing priorities/time lines.


  • Bachelors degree, preferably with a concentration in Printing or Graphic Arts, from an accredited institution or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Graphic Artist, Traffic Coordinator, or Print Planner in a corporate environment, preferably with a packaging background.

  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office, Microsoft Projects, Power Point, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign & Photoshop.

  • Be able to open files, perform text changes, graphic edits, and proof artwork files.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively negotiate time lines.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects and yet maintain attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze and quantify complex data; identify pertinent indicators.

  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills, ability to work alone and unsupervised.

  • Ability to take action on own initiative when warranted.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Provide support in all Graphics projects as a SME (Subject Matter Expert).

  • Domestic and International team support of Launch and LCM projects.

  • Understanding of Anti-Counterfeiting processes currently endorsed by BIAH and how they are to be implemented.

  • Key User for OnePAC (workflow tool).

  • Responsible for testing upgrades to system and training support for new users.

  • Design Guideline SME for Stand Alone and BI Guidelines.

  • Understanding of the Guidelines to maintain design consistency throughout the product portfolio.

  • GS1 & BI Coding Handbook expertise.

  • SME for all coding requirements for BI product through the different sales channels and the impact on printed packaging materials.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
