Job Overview:

The Associate Instrumentation & Controls Engineer is responsible for utilizing existing instrumentation and controls procedures to solve routine or standard problems. They receive instruction, guidance, and direction from others within the team, and they will leverage their conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures related to instrumentation and controls, and engineering.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed design engineering, analysis, and calculations on basic engineering tasks

  • Apply knowledge and skills to complete routine assignments under close supervision and mentoring

  • Prepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and procedures

  • Organize own work to meet deadlines set by others

  • Communicate information, asking questions and checking for understanding

  • Gain an understanding of the project scope of work, specifications, schedule, and all inter-discipline requirements

  • Prepare sketches of detailed design to guide Designers

  • Review MTOs for requisitions

  • Check drawings

  • Keep the Lead Engineer apprised of all activities, progress, and concerns

  • Develop an awareness of costs related to own work

  • Develop a basic understanding of MDR's business and the customers it serves

  • Develop basic knowledge of MDR's business units and interactions including engineering, fabrication, and marine functions

  • Develop advanced skills in the use of standard productivity tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Prepare the development of key project deliverables, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Vessel Level Sketches

  • Instrument Index

  • Instrument Data Sheets

  • Instrument Calculations (i.e., Valves, Flowmeters, etc.)

  • P&ID Development

  • Participate in project reviews, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • P&ID Reviews

  • Development and support of vendor packages, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Create requisition packages for basic instrumentation

  • Review supplier documents for basic instrumentation and mechanical packages

  • Site support, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Provide technical support to Construction personnel for I&C engineering-related inquiries as needed

Reports to: Project: Lead Engineer

Functional: Supervising Engineer or Engineering Manager

Liaise with: Engineers, Design Supervisors, and Designers of their own discipline 

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, or Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (Master’s Degree is Preferred)

  • 0-3 years of experience in oil and gas; prefer experience at the site during construction and commissioning

  • Working knowledge of the content and application of standards, codes, and guidelines

  • Experience with Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI), InstruCalc, and MS Office Suite including Excel and Word

  • Learning the content and application of standards, codes, and guidelines as applicable

  • Learning design techniques and analysis methods

  • Preferably Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or member of a professional engineering society
