Job Summary:

 

The role of the Reading Specialist is to provide high-quality instruction, support and leadership in the area of Reading and literacy for elementary students in the Upper Darby School District. The Reading Specialist assists with establishing school wide and individual reading goals. Additionally, the Reading Specialist will provide interventions to students and work with teachers to implement additional supports in the classroom.

Additionally, the Reading Specialist will provide interventions to students and work with teachers to implement additional supports in the classroom. 

 

*Essential Functions: *

  • Coordinate and facilitate school-wide literacy program. Provide support to teachers and provide strategies to improve instruction that will support literacy growth across the curriculum.
  • Collaborates with teachers in all departments to promote the learning and implementation of best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Examines data to measure the success of literacy programs and instruction.
  • Teach targeted literacy intervention to small groups of students daily using research-based strategies and resources.
  • Conduct individual and school wide assessments in order to evaluate levels and targeted interventions.
  • Review student achievement and assist with placing students in appropriate reading and writing intervention and support services.
  • Meet regularly with the classroom teachers to plan literacy instruction that correlates with the individual student's needs or as requested by the classroom teacher.   

Qualifications: 

  1. Must have appropriate PA certification.
  2. Knowledge of content in the certification area
  3. Classroom/group management skills
  4. Ability to use instructional materials and equipment
  5. Knowledge of child growth and development
  6. Instructional skills
  7. Planning Skills
  8. Human Relations Skills
  9. Strong communication and motivational skills.
  10. Ability to effectively communicate with, instruct, and work with students, staff and parents.
