DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Description of Job The Colorado Department of Transportation has one opening for a Control Room Dispatcher/Operator at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel located in Dillon, CO. This position is responsible for providing technical and administrative support to Tunnel maintenance operations in order to maintain safe travel. This position implements professional standards in communication in answering inquiries from tunnel employees and outside agencies regarding departmental procedures and road conditions. This position monitors cameras, fans, power systems, specialized systems (e.g. Fixed Fire Suppression System), evaluates the situation, and then dispatches CDOT employees and/or notifies outside agencies as each situation warrants. This position also completes data entry and tracks various information and documents in a variety of computer systems.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Utilize CDOT policies and procedures to support the safety and maintenance operations of CDOT personnel and the traveling public. Constantly monitor over 140 camera screens and continuous flow metering devices; monitor and operate the power control board, tunnel fans, and fixed fire suppression system. Monitor cameras for over-height vehicles, extra wide/long loads, and for vehicles carrying hazardous materials (HazMat). Process HazMat vehicles when US Highway 6 is closed. Maintain accurate records of all events that occur in or around the tunnel, as well as hourly record keeping of tunnel data. Collect, evaluate, collate, and create reports of tracked data. Operate various devices such as VMS boards, Icy Road Control and Chain Law in Effect signs, open/close runaway truck ramps, and activate the appropriate chain down stations. Communicate efficiently and effectively via radio and telephone to maintain effective operation of tunnel activities. Remain calm at all times and dispatch qualified CDOT personnel and/or local agencies for emergency situations. Maintain safety consciousness and situational awareness, especially in regards to the traffic in and around the tunnel. Receive and relay emergency information, inquiries and/or questions from CDOT employees, the traveling public, and constituents to proper authorit es or entities and provides answers when appropriate. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with CDOT personnel and external stakeholders, such as law enforcement, Colorado State Patrol, fire and emergency medical services, municipalities, counties, and other state agencies.
