Description

THE CITY OF DETROIT IS HIRING DRIVERS

CDL DRIVERS- CLASS B REQUIRED

VEHICLE OPERATOR I STARTING HOURLY RATE $17.25

VALID COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE WITH AIR BRAKE ENDORSEMENT REQUIRED

Under general supervision, drives and operates special purpose vehicles and equipment consistent with the specified class evaluation factors.

Examples of Duties

  • Drives and operates special purpose vehicles and equipment consistent with departmental standards and procedures.

  • Operates mounted equipment, implements, and accessories associated with or attached to the vehicle.

  • Loads and unloads materials or transported equipment.

  • Plans sequence of operations.

  • Changes various attachments.

  • Directs the work activities of assigned helpers.

  • Performs minor maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, cleaning and servicing with gasoline, diesel fuel, water, oil, and grease.

  • Assists in performing repairs of vehicles and equipment during inclement weather.

  • Assists crew of assigned vehicle.

    VEHICLE OPERATOR I’s hired will also be required to perform duties consistent with General Environmental Technician I as a dual role:

GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN I

  • Perform any of a variety of tasks involving physical strength and agility, such as hand tools, including, but not limited to, grass mowing equipment and other yard tools. • Perform routine labor/maintenance work in an outdoor setting such as removing debris, shrubbery, overgrowth and miscellaneous items from walkways, alleys, corridors and other areas.

  • Clean assigned areas and equipment.

  • Assist with erecting, repairing, and constructing fences, including but not limited to, wooden and metal.

  • Utilize common hand tools, including, but not limited to, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, and other tools used to perform routine groundwork/landscape.

  • Clean walls, windows, restrooms, water coolers and other water dispensing units, swimming pools, kitchen equipment, interior and exterior surfaces of vehicles.

  • Sweep dusts, waxes, mops, and polishes floors, stairs, woodwork, elevators and furniture.

  • Operate shredding equipment, vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, polishers, buffers or other industrial cleaning equipment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to read and write English and to understand and follow oral instructions; high school graduation or G.E.D. preferred. One year of experience performing heavy labor duties preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

ALL APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS AT LEAST A CLASS "B" CDL at the time of application.

  • High school graduation or GED.

  • Two years of experience in the operation of special purpose vehicles and equipment-Preferred.

    NOTE: The preexisting education requirement (completion of eight grades of schooling) will apply to current employees promoted or certified to this classification who were affiliated with Teamsters Local 214 in a classification listed in the Teamsters Craft Unit Schedule as of the date of this specification's adoption (12/15/2011).

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid State of Michigan Chauffeur License and Commercial Driver License with Group B

Designation and Air Brake Endorsement.

• A current valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance

with State of Michigan Motor Carrier safety Act of 1998.

• Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

CLASS EVALUATION FACTORS: The distinction between the three levels of Vehicle Operator is based upon the complexity and size of equipment operated and the difficulty and level of skill required to drive and operate a special purpose vehicle and associated auxiliary equipment.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
