VMware Sr. Director, Engineering - Tanzu Kubernetes Grid - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Detroit, Michigan

TKG builds on trusted open source and community projects, and delivers an engineered and supported Kubernetes platform for end users and partners. The TKG team has experienced huge growth and given its strategic importance to VMware will continue to grow and enable new use cases and opportunities.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

This Sr. Director position will be responsible for building and leading an impactful and motivated team of engineers effectively working, collaborating, and delivering innovative features and platform capabilities for TKG.

  • The role partners with product managers and technical leaders

  • Builds the team through recruiting and growing team members

  • Works with leadership to develop program and business objectives

  • Aligns team activities to program and business objectives

  • Continuously works with the team to ensure effective processes for productivity and predictability

  • Facilitates collaboration and communication within and across teams

  • Effectively communicates with many types of audiences

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?

Success in this role will mean you are able to present TKG and how it ties into the Tanzu portfolio, and the team is executing against a shared vision. Team members have career development and growth plans established. The team feels empowered, recognized and challenged.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?


  • Lead and scale a talented engineering team to 100+ Manage multi-level, multi-site, internationally distributed team

  • Recruit by leveraging a strong network to draw upon

  • Communicate and work across organizational boundaries

  • Develop a track record of execution

Product Development:

  • Leverage your cloud, on-prem, and SaaS-based software development experience and best practices to ensure the team is productive, engaged, and motivated

  • Scale both engineering systems and processes in a hyper-growth environment. (People, Process and Tools)

  • Leverage your enterprise software, API development, and software quality know-how to ensure TKG meets the expectations of customers and ecosystem partners


  • Gain the respect of a highly technical team through your technical knowledge and ability to learn fast

  • Develop TKG as a highly reliable and highly secure platform

  • Partner with Product Management to interface with customers and ensure we understand and can meet their needs


  • Adapt and drive change in a fluid organization

  • Develop a diverse, inclusive, transparent, and trusting work environment

  • Drive and organize the engineering team in a healthy, constructive, and balanced way

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Brad Meiseles, VP of Engineering. Brad has been at VMware for more than 11 years, and is one of the original members of Modern Application Platform Business Unit.

Brad will work with you to set strategy, provide guidance, and remove impediments. He will expect you to be self-driven, creative, and energized to achieve the team’s mission.
