Description

Under general supervision, oversees several major and lesser sized construction and maintenance projects . Supervises a group of subordinate inspectors engaged in the inspection of construction activities. Ensures compliance with plans, specifications, codes and recognized standards and methods of work.

Examples of Duties

  • Oversees several construction projects.

  • Supervises a moderate to large-sized group of subordinate inspectors engaged in construction inspection activities.

  • Reviews design plans and provides information on site peculiarities.

  • Provides location information to ensure that work performed does not damage existing utilities.

  • Reviews and/or prepares daily and weekly work progress reports and other required construction accounting and documentation.

  • Prepares estimates for contract progress payments by monitoring work plans, cost breakdowns, and schedules of values to determine reasonable progress.

  • Inspects, verifies and makes recommendations to superiors on conditions encountered that require changes to contract specifications or construction work procedures and timetables.

  • Assists in resolving disputes with contractors or their representatives by examining conditions and making decisions.

  • Ensures safety regulations are enforced on construction sites.

  • Interprets plans and specifications.

  • Coordinate all field testing/sampling requirements with the Inspectors/Laboratory staff or individually perform the testing, as needed to ensure that field testing/sampling is performed according to the protocol.

  • Trains and instructs subordinate inspection staff in all phases of the work.

  • Maintains quality control standards by ensuring inspection and field or laboratory testing of all construction materials, supplies and equipment used on construction projects.

  • Reviews and accepts materials test certifications and documentation.

  • Ensures delivery of contract required project operation and maintenance manuals.

  • Oversees construction layout topographic and boundary survey work.

  • Participates in final inspections of work completed before final close-out and issuance of certificate of completion.

  • Maintains both field and office liaison with governmental agencies awarding and regulating construction contracts, communities and individuals affected by construction activities, manufacturers, suppliers and contractors, by providing information, responding to complaints and initiating correspondence relating to construction projects.

  • Consults and assists superiors and divisional supervisors of project inspection staffing needs, equipment, workloads, assignments, training, orientation and possible problems .

  • Compiles, maintains and stores records, drawings and plans related to assigned construction projects.

  • Reviews for accuracy and ensures that all final construction drawings for completed projects reflect the projects as built.

  • Schedules assigned inspection, engineering and clerical personnel.

  • Assigns work, reviews work in progress and upon completion, evaluates performance and recommends disciplinary action.

  • Prepares special reports and makes special inspections relative to proposed construction.

  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

  • High school graduation or GED.

  • Four (4) years of experience in inspection, construction and field engineering work, two years (2) of which shall have been in the field of specialization indicated by the title of the classification on municipal projects.

  • A portion of the total experience requirement must include one (1) year of experience in a supervisory or team leader capacity .

    Qualifications (preferred):

  • C ompletion of two (2) years of course work in an engineering college of a university of recognized standing.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
