Henry Ford Health System Coordinator – Laboratory Services (Quality Systems Division) in Detroit, Michigan

The Coordinator of Laboratory Services Quality System Division is responsible for planning continuous improvement initiatives [PDCA and Kaizen] facilitating quality meetings and facilitating the use of process improvement tools for the Pathology Product Line and its customers.

This role oversees more than eight major quality management systems that support quality improvement, lean education to over 700 pathology staff members at more than 30 locations, accreditation including conducting internal CAP LAP and ISO 15189 accreditation audits, safety, nonconformance records and remediation efforts.

  • Accreditation: Ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining a robust Quality Management System (QMS), preparing for and undergoing accreditation inspections for Pathology Product Line, recording and retaining accurate documentation, and engaging in continuous improvement activities.

  • Quality: Serving as a Subject Matter Expert in Lean fundamentals, planning, and leading Kaizen events, managing nonconformance systems, preparing quality reports, and facilitating quality events and process improvement initiatives[A3, Kaizen, Daily Mgmt].

  • Safety: Maintaining a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations[CAP, ISO, OSHA], identifying and mitigating risks, engaging in continuous improvement activities, and keeping accurate safety-related documentation.

  • Education: Developing and delivering training on Lean tools, accreditation standards, and safety procedures to ensure staff are knowledgeable and competent. Plan training events, prepare presentations and educational materials to train at four 2- day live Lean Silver training sessions each year.

    GENERAL SUMMARY:

    Reporting to Laboratory Director or Manager, coordinates daily operation of large

    or technically complex laboratory areas. Coordinates specimen processing,

    testing, and reporting to ensure standard work methods and consistent quality.

    Oversees employee assignments, competency, and record keeping. Leads daily

    management of quality and deviation management. Coordinates technical

    projects such as instrument evaluation and method validation.

    PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Coordinates daily operations of the laboratory including scheduling

    employees and daily work assignments across large or technically

    complex sections of the lab. Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning,

    testing, and reporting to meet service standards.

    1. Assists other laboratory staff and leaders to meet or exceed customer

    expectations. This often involves the use of quality management

    techniques to gather data and improve processes.

    1. Compiles and maintains employee records including attendance, work

    assignments, performance records, proficiency testing, and competency

    records as required by accrediting agencies.

    1. Coordinates activities and maintains records of preventive maintenance

    programs.

    1. Coordinates the validation of new methods, instruments and software as

    required.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    1. Minimum of an accredited Bachelor's Degree Program in chemical, physical

    or biologic science, medical technology or clinical laboratory science required

    1. Requires a demonstrated record of three to five years of progressive

    responsibility

    1. Demonstrated leadership skills, technical proficiency and theoretical

    knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions and to coordinate the

    quality and volume of work

    1. Certification at the technologist level from a nationally recognized national agency

    such as, ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS or HEW is preferred

    1. Working knowledge of statistics, basic computer software and laboratory

    methodologies. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

    1. Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less

    2. Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships

    3. Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus

    4. Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify colors necessary to perform

    job duties

    CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Certification at the technologist level from a nationally recognized national agency such

    as, ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS or HEW is preferred
