Description

The position of Detroit Police Trauma Counselor II works under direct supervision, of the Detroit Police Victim Assistance and is primarily responsible for providing direct services, more specifically individual counseling and group counseling to victims, families, and communities affected by domestic violence sexual assault, and homicide. The skill, knowledge and minimum qualifications required, for this position, are skills that commensurate with the completion of a master’s degree in counseling and a valid state of Michigan counseling license to practice. Skills and abilities associated with the provision of customer service; independent and team functioning and ability to communicate with all levels of management. There is no travel associated with this position and the hours per day and week are eight (8) and forty (40), respectively. Employees, in these positions, have no supervisory responsibilities. All Detroit Police Victim Assistance Trauma Counselor ll's are 100% contractual and exempt from all union affiliations. As this particular title is assigned to the Special Victims Unit, DPD Precinct’s and the main location of the DPD Victim Assistance Unit, the duties associated with the assignment are as follows:

Examples of Duties

  • Provide both long and short term counseling to all victims.

  • Complete follow-up calls on all crime reports.

  • Assist victims, who are unable to do so, in completing witness statements.

  • Provide basic crisis information, as needed when answering the DPD VAP crisis phone line.

  • Compile and complete DPD VAP monthly statistics.

  • Attend all skill development sessions.

  • Documentation of all rendered services.

  • Co-facilate support groups all of crime victims.

  • Assist in community outreach initiatives as needed.

  • Maintain professional counseling credentialing through the LARA (licensing and regulatory affairs).

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The desired candidate must possess one (1) year or more of experience in the area of the applied position. The skills, knowledge and minimum qualifications required for this position, are skills commensurate with the competition of a Master’s Degree in Counseling and a valid state of Michigan Counseling license .

The Desired candidate must possess a Valid Michigan Driver’s License and maintain a driving recorded that is in accordance to the Detroit Police Department standards to operate Department Vehicles prior to and throughout employment with the Detroit Police Department.

Supplemental Information

Special Note: This is an at-will appointment, and the candidate selected serves at the pleasure of the Chief of Police. This is a grant funded position, and may be eliminated when the funding ends. Candidates will be required to undergo a full criminal background check prior to execution of contractual agreement or hiring.

This plan is provided by Blue Care Network of Michigan and utilizes their PCP Focus Network. This plan provides you with the opportunity to receive an enhanced level of benefits and pay less out of your paycheck for your medical plan. There are two important requirements that you should consider and understand if you should decide to enroll in this plan. You will have to choose a primary care physician that serves within the PCP Focus network. This primary care physician coordinates your care. The network includes over 22,000 Primary Care Physicians. There are also Wellness Requirements that you (the subscriber) must meet in order to remain in the enhanced level of benefit.

Administrative Special Services Staff (Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:

  • CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.

  • VACATION – Granted (1) day per pay period, not to exceed 20 days per fiscal year

  • PAID HOLIDAYS – Granted if paid for 600 straight time hours in the (12) months prior to the holiday

  • MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT - Granted on same basis as regular employees.

  • WORKERS COMPENSATION – Covered by applicable laws.

  • UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION - Covered by applicable laws.

  • HOSPITALIZATION – You are eligible to purchase healthcare benefits for yourself and your dependents under a group rate. You will be responsible for the full premium, no employer contribution will be applied. Please review the Health Care Plan Options Booklet for more detailed information.

  • This position is not eligible for the City Pension Plan, dental, vision, optical, death, life, disability, funeral, reserve sick or jury duty.

Administrative Special Services Staff (Non-Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:

  • CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) Day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.

  • VACATION – Granted on the following basis:
