Essential Functions (Job Duties):
Wayne State University Law School seeks an Academic Service Officer II/III to serve in the capacity of the Law School’s Assistant Director of Diversity Outreach. In coordination with the Law School’s Assistant Dean of Admissions, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in recruitment, admission, counseling and retention of students underrepresented in law.
Provides admissions counseling to prospective and admitted first-year students and transfer students, particularly those underrepresented in law. Highlights benefits of the Law School using specific examples and a thorough explanation of programs and opportunities. Promotes the community environment, alumni network and career opportunities.
Advises potential and admitted students, particularly those underrepresented in law, on admission requirements, degree requirements, important deadlines, critical information, and graduation information. Handles student walk-ins, telephone inquiries, and email requests for information regarding the J.D. program. Must be knowledgeable of campus and law school resources designed to assist students with academic success.
Works collaboratively with the Office of Student Affairs on pipeline programs at the undergraduate level. Develops and maintains strong and effective collaborations with other WSU departments, as well as other university schools/colleges to maximize the effectiveness of recruiting and retaining students underrepresented in law.
Works collaboratively with Marketing and Communications to develop and execute marketing and communication strategies to support enrollment goals. Professionally promotes the Law School through recruitment events on campus and across the country. Creates new strategies aimed at recruiting students to the Law School by developing and implementing innovative and effective recruitment strategies that target students underrepresented in the law .
Unique Duties:
This is a travel-intense position with 50%-100% travel required during various time of the year.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree or J.D. required, J.D. preferred.
Minimum 1-3 years' experience in higher education in relevant areas; enrollment services, academic advising, curricular planning, student affairs, or directly related experience.
Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Experience with mentoring and establishing rapport with students of all backgrounds.
Demonstrated excellence in time management and organization skills.
Demonstrated excellence in written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work well with others, with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and students.
Critical thinking skills and the ability to propose and implement effective solutions to issues and/or problems.
Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and efficiently prioritize workload.
