Job Description

The 5th Judicial District has an opening for a Law Clerk 1 in Des Moines, IA (Polk County). This Clerkship will start in August 2025.

The Law Clerk position is a great opportunity for law school graduates seeking to gain practical, hands-on experience applying your knowledge to assist with cases being investigated and litigated by the State of Iowa courts. This opportunity will also enhance your knowledge and understanding of the litigation life cycle as you assist with the public, judges, attorneys, and government officials in a variety of situations and circumstances. Looking for two (2) positions to be filled and start August of 2025.

The starting salary for a Law Clerk 1 is $26.55 per hour / $2124.00 biweekly, on an 80-hour per pay period basis.

Hours:Monday – Friday, 8:00A – 4:30P

Employees in this class perform research and administrative functions for judges of the district court. To be successful in this position you will need to have the following:

This is intended to be a one-year clerkship opportunity. Depending on funding, availability, and performance, this clerkship may be extended up to an additional year.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited law school is required

  • High standard of academic excellence and considerable experience in legal research and writing are desirable.
