Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.

Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.

As a Medical Assistant you will support the delivery of healthcare by providing clinical care and administrative support as delegated by licensed clinical staff. You will work in accordance with standards and scope established by PHC policies and procedures. Perform work with special consideration for patient safety and infection control policies and procedures. Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to welcome patients to a safe and inclusive environment and to engage patients in holistic care.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborates with assigned Patient Care Team and others to provide needed healthcare to patients in a clinic setting. Performs assigned workflows efficiently and effectively.

  • Prepares for exam/procedure and assists provider as requested. Facilitates the patient rooming and intake process and obtains accurate patient vital signs per established workflow.

  • Documents patient care accurately and timely in the electronic health record. Completes timely prior authorizations and referrals per established guidelines.

  • Performs point-of-care testing per CLIA guidelines and other established workflows. Ensures service orders are completed timely. Administers medications, immunizations, and treatments per written or standing orders.

  • Provides patient education appropriate to the patient’s age and identified learning needs.

  • Completes and accurately documents quality controls per established process. Performs pre-cleaning and transport of contaminated instruments per infection control policies and procedures. Routinely evaluates supply levels in exam rooms, removing expired supplies and restocking as appropriate.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required

  • Effective Medical Assistant skills with ability to utilize universal precautions in patient care.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and collaboration skills with ability for a team approach to care plus develop and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.

  • Organization and priority skills with detail orientation.

  • Professional skills with ability to remain composed in all situations and show empathy.

  • Basic computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and electronic health record system.

  • Effective problem-solving skills.

  • Licenses & Certifications: Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration issued by AAMA, AMT, NCCT or NHA; current Basic Life Support for HealthCare Providers; current Mandatory Reporter approved for the State of Iowa. * Must be obtained with Introductory Period if not current.

Preferred

  • Associate Degree in related field.

  • Work experience in a community health center or medical clinic.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in Spanish.

  • Phlebotomy skills.

    Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $17.00 - $21.25, though highly experienced candidates may earn up to $25.50 per hour. PHC also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
