Job Summary and Qualifications

General summary of duties: Assist physicians in performing nurse procedures for the comfort and well being of patients. This includes nurse assessments on Oncology and Hematology patients, medical histories, completing lab and other diagnostic requests, and simple treatment and education of the patient as directed by the physician or non-physician provider. There will also be administrative duties outlined below.

PRACTICE STANDARDS/ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Contributes to appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.

• Ensures patient safety and protection; collects and records data on patient condition including vital signs. Uses/manages equipment safely and appropriately.

• Greeting patients and preparing them for examination or procedure.

• Preparing exam/ treatment supplies and equipment and assisting MD/NP during treatment, examination and testing of patients.

• Triaging patients for a smooth and productive flow.

  1. Communicates with patients, team members, and management in an accurate, timely manner.

• Talks with, listens to patients/team members; reports pertinent, concise information; completes charting in a timely manner; manages computer charting/ordering as appropriate; protects confidentiality of patient/colleagues.

• Notes problem list/ abnormality for MD/NP.

• Observes and records and reports patient conditions and reaction to medications and treatment. Works closely with the Nurse Navigator in the clinic to ensure proper closed loop communication for the safety of the patient.

  1. Manages Medical Records

• Ensures that patient chart entries are made accurately and in a timely matter and forwarding charts as appropriate.

• Maintain patient files, records and other information

  1. Applies critical thinking skills and considers alternatives.

• Organizes multitask workload; prioritizes tasks/work; seeks assistance as necessary; collects data from multiple sources as necessary; organizes/ gives report on multiple patients in a day under the direction of and in collaboration with MD/NP.

  1. Develops and maintains human care relationships.

• Understands the impact illness/hospitalization have on patients/families; adapts care delivery for diverse populations and environments; advocates for needs of clients; provides care in ethical and legal manner; refers concerns/issues to MD/NP.

  1. Manages self and resources effectively.

• Acknowledges limits of experience and capability; identifies learning needs and seeks resources; utilizes equipment and supplies appropriately; maintains clean, orderly environment of care; ensures traffic control in “sensitive areas”; seeks out and accepts feedback; requests assistance appropriately. Delegates as appropriate, to medical assistant and or clerical support.

  1. Incorporates teaching in delivery of care with a focus on heath promotion.

• Collaborates with team including nurse navigator, social worker, nutritionist, and provider to provide information to patients, screens for barriers to learning.

• Instructs family and patient in follow up instructions for medication and treatment. This may include contacting pharmacies for prescription ordering and notifying patients

  1. Applies knowledge integration skills for the patient populations served within unit/area of hire.

• Provides age-specific care; applies knowledge of expected norms in provision of care.

• Responsible for infection control and disposition handling of infectious or hazardous material.

  1. Administrative support for MD/NP

• Print MD/NP schedule for the day

• Assist with Provider folder that needs signatures

• Arrange referrals to additional specialist with the front administrative staff

• Cleaning and restocking of patient rooms in between patients

  1. Demonstrates specific skills requisite for assigned role and service area in collaboration with the MD/NP.

  2. Meets Parkland Medical Center standards related to:

• Patient Safety: reports actual or potential medical/health care errors, near-misses or other opportunities to improve patient safety. Participates in safety education, safety, quality and performance improvement initiatives.

• Customer Service/Patient Centered Care: shows genuine concern, respect, and ability to communicate cordially with patients, visitors, physicians, and other employees; is sensitive to customer inconveniences and responds accordingly.

• Confidentiality, compliance, patient/provider rights. Adheres to corporate and professional codes of conduct, Standards of Excellence, HIPAA privacy standards.

• Attendance, punctuality, meetings - Participates in continuing education programs & mandatory education to maintain competence and gain additional skills & documents attendance. Annual absenteeism will not exceed HR standards, attends at least 50% of staff meetings, reads communications.

  1. Identifies personal learning needs based on performance, sets goals for the next 12 months. Meets goals established previously.

Required: Licensure by State of NH as a Registered Nurse; graduate of an approved RN program;

Current AHA or ARC BCLS.

Experience in an MD office

Computer literate

Within 90 days of hire ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate

Preferred: Six months’ experience as an RN in Oncology

Phlebotomy skills preferred but will train after hire
