Job Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Strategy & Execution:
Develop and implement a preventive and predictive maintenance program to ensure the longevity and reliability of machinery and equipment.
Lead the maintenance team in identifying and addressing root causes of recurring equipment failures, focusing on permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes.
Oversee the day-to-day maintenance activities, ensuring both routine and emergency maintenance tasks are handled promptly and effectively.
Hands-On Maintenance & Repairs:
Perform hands-on maintenance and repairs of plant equipment, including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, and PLC systems.
Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment failures, ensuring permanent fixes are implemented to reduce recurring issues.
Lead by example by working alongside the maintenance team to resolve complex technical issues.
Team Leadership & Development:
Ensure high performance by addressing skill gaps and underperformance when necessary. This includes assessing team effectiveness and adjusting to ensure the right people are in place to meet operational needs.
Shapes the KPI framework for the entire team, establishes, cascades and manages individual objectives ensuring alignment with business strategy.
Foster a safety-first culture within the maintenance team, ensuring adherence to all safety and regulatory requirements.
Preventative & Predictive Maintenance and Asset Management
Implement and execute a preventative maintenance program, ensuring all equipment is serviced according to schedule.
Liaise with specialists and contractors regarding regulatory requirements.
Ensure that any external and internal reports are acted upon promptly including, creating rectification/improvement plans showing estimated costs, timelines and potential impacts.
Ensure the facility's physical assets are well-maintained, and plan for equipment life-cycle management, including the retirement and replacement of outdated machinery.
Establish and monitor key equipment performance indicators (KPIs) and assess the health of assets to predict and plan for future maintenance needs or replacement.
Safety
Ensure full compliance with safety regulations, particularly with regard to electrical safety, HVAC requirements, gas, dust exposure and address any recurring compliance issues.
Develop and enforce maintenance procedures in line with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations.
Conduct (and ensure the maintenance team conduct) regular risk assessments, safety audits, and training to minimise safety hazards.
Partner with the EH&S Manager through the Alkegen GHSM Safety audit and safety compliance program to implement corrective and/or improvement actions.
Energy & Environmental Management
Identify opportunities for energy savings by optimising equipment performance, lighting, and HVAC systems. Implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce operational costs and environmental impact.
Work on implementing sustainability initiatives, such as waste reduction, water conservation, or energy efficiency improvements, aligned with the company's environmental goals.
Data-Driven Maintenance & Continuous Improvement:
Implement a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track and analyse maintenance activities, ensuring data-driven decisions to improve equipment uptime and reliability.
Use maintenance data to identify trends, reduce downtime, and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Lead root cause analysis efforts for chronic equipment failures and implement solutions that ensure long-term reliability.
Introduce and implement new technologies such as predictive maintenance tools, devices for equipment monitoring, and automation to improve operational efficiency.
Identify opportunities for capital investments in new equipment or infrastructure upgrades, and work with the leadership team to justify and implement these projects.
Maintenance Budget & Cost Control:
Plan and control the maintenance department’s budget, balancing cost savings with necessary expenditures to maintain equipment performance and safety standards.
Develop an inventory management system for spare parts, tools, and equipment. Work with procurement to ensure critical parts are always available while controlling costs related to inventory.
Implement strategies to minimize overstocking and understocking of critical components.
Facilities Management
Oversee the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of security systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems.
Implement upgrades to security technologies as needed to protect company assets and personnel.
Develop and enforce policies for access to the facility, ensuring that only authorized personnel can enter restricted areas including the monitoring of entry points and manage the distribution of keycards.
Oversee the internal and external upkeep of the facility, including general repairs, high level cleaning, and maintaining grounds and infrastructure.
Coordinate regular reviews of security measures, including physical barriers such as fences, gates, and doors, to ensure facility perimeter security.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Strong electrical engineering background with good levels of mechanical proficiency, (60% electrical /40% mechanical).
At least 8 years’ experience of working and leading other engineers within a process driven manufacturing environment.
At least 8 years’ experience of overseeing maintenance or machinery installation projects
At least 8 years of experience of working with and programming PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley).
City & Guilds 2391 Certificate
Competence in Testing and Inspection and IET Wiring Regulations (18th Edition).
IOSH Managing Safely
Familiarity with relevant UK laws and regulations, such as PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations), The Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC): LOTO (Lock Out, Tag Out), Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
Experience of working with a ISO9001:2015 quality management system.
Demonstrates a proactive demeanour, demonstrating a strong inclination towards practical engagement and a willingness to actively participate in hands-on tasks.
Experience working with external contractors or vendors for specialised maintenance or repairs or equipment inspections.
Good working knowledge of TPM principles, which focus on maximising equipment effectiveness through proactive and preventive techniques involving the entire workforce.
Demonstrated ability to navigate challenging interpersonal dynamics and implement necessary changes to maintain team effectiveness and operational success.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
NEBOSHH Certificate
Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
ILM Level 4 or equivalent leadership qualification
Knowledge of and experience with advanced manufacturing technologies such as automation, robotics, or Industry 4.0.
Working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management requirements.
