Description of Job

Position Summary:

This amazing opportunity for a dynamic Speech-Language Pathologist to serve as the Speech- Language Impairment Specialist at the Colorado Department of Education is available. The position offers state-wide and national leadership opportunities impacting technical assistance, guidance, and policy for learners with a Speech-Language Impairment. Examples of other responsibilities include providing statewide professional development and technical assistance to administrative units serving students with communication disorders. Finally, this position offers an opportunity to facilitate coordination between Colorado University training programs for Speech-Language Pathologists and Speech-Language pathologists – Assistants.

This position is responsible for serving as the state consultant on speech/language impairment with responsibilities to: (a) provide universal, targeted, or intensive professional learning and technical assistance to speech/language pathologists, speech-language pathology assistants or other professionals serving students with communication disorders; (b) manage and direct the activities of the Speech-Language Advisory Committee (c) be knowledgeable about federal and state guidelines for school-based speech-language services; (d) collaborate with other ESSU personnel on issues specific to school-based speech-language services., including multilingual learners with disabilities who also have communication challenges., and (e) facilitate coordination between Colorado's IHE programs training SLPs and SLPAs. This position also supports the work guidance for the part-time OT / PT Specialist.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop, manage, and implement an approved annual budget of leadership, professional learning, and statewide TA activities to (a) support accurate identification of students with disabilities with a specific on students with speech language impairment and (b) provide universal, targeted, and intensive level assessment, service strategies, and progress monitoring and outcome measures for school personnel working directly with children or youth who have communication disorders.

• Provide leadership, technical assistance, professional learning and written guidance to the field related to the implementation of eligibility criteria for Speech Language Impairment.

  • Consult and collaborate with CDE and field colleagues to design and implement professional learning and TA products to address outcomes for students with disabilities who have speech/language and communication needs across appropriate eligibility categories and inclusive of multilingual students with disabilities.

• Consult and collaborate with ESSU colleagues to design and implement general supervision procedures and, as needed, lead the provision of customized technical assistance to administrative units related to compliance with federal and state laws (IDEA, and ECEA) and training and support needs for improved outcomes of students with disabilities. This includes professional learning and TA specific to appropriate federal indicators.

• Provide leadership and serve as a resource to university training programs and administrative units regarding recruitment, retention, training, and ethical standards of practice for school-based speech-language pathologists and speech-language pathology assistants.

• Lead state advisory committees / work groups to provide information regarding CDE initiatives and solicit ongoing input and feedback related to needs in the field of speech language pathology and maintain active involvement with appropriate national committees.

  • Facilitate coordination between CDE and the Colorado IHEs who provide preservice training for Speech Language Pathologists and Speech Language Pathologist Assistants.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUMEDUCATION ANDEXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Masters degree from an accredited university in speech language pathology

• 5 years of school-based experience within a special education field

• 5 years experience in evaluation practices specific to special education eligibility

• Demonstrated effectiveness in delivering professional learning to adult learners.

• Evidence of collaborative experience on project management including budgeting and expenditure procedure..

• Experience with a variety of conditions and severity levels of school aged speech, communication, and language disorders.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong attention to detail (proofing work, spelling, grammar, formatting, etc).

• Ability to effectively balance quality of work and productivity expectations.

• Ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external customers (e. g., school districts, other CDE units).

• Ability to prioritize and organize work to accommodate and meet the changing needs of the department and meet deadlines.

• Takes initiative and exhibits a proactive approach to work.

• Identifies problems and recommends solutions prior to the standard being jeopardized.

• Ability to work independently, as well as on a team.

• Exhibits CDE’s mission, vision and values by the consistent expression of professional, respectful, and customer service oriented behaviors.

• Ability and willingness to travel.

• Ability to pass a background check.
