Description of Job:

As the Deputy Chief of Staff, you will be a valued member of the Executive Unit, which provides direct support to the Office of the Secretary of State. You will be a part of a department that continues to be recognized as a leader, both in Colorado and nationally.

In this position, you will experience working within a high-functioning professional team to serve as an advisor to the Secretary, Chief of Staff & Strategy, Deputy Secretary, and other Program Managers on the day-to-day execution of Department projects and progress towards longer term strategic goals. This role will oversee and supervise two positions within the Executive Unit.

Illustration of some key duties:

Advisor & Thought Partner to the Secretary of State & the Chief of Staff and Strategy

  • Identify opportunities for and develop plans to execute various strategic initiatives and projects that are in alignment with and would serve the Department’s longer-term goals, in collaboration with the Chief of Staff & Strategy.

  • Support the Chief of Staff & Strategy in executing directives of the Secretary of State.

  • Serve as a thought partner on complex issues that require Department engagement or response, including project planning and execution, communications, and other key work areas of the Executive Unit.

  • Support the connectivity between the Executive Unit and division leadership and staff, including the day-to-day collaboration and strategizing with division leaders on emergent issues facing the Department. This includes the participation in routine and ad hoc meetings of CDOS leadership.

Supervise Assigned Personnel & Oversee Effectiveness of Staff for Scheduling & the Secretary’s Participation in Meetings & Events

  • Direct and supervise the scheduling and meetings & events coordination for the Secretary, which includes the direct supervision of the Executive Assistant and Meetings, Events and Operations Coordinator.

  • Set procedures and policies within the Executive Unit pertaining to the overall organization and execution of scheduling and event coordination for the Secretary.

  • Resolve problems such as performance issues, disputes, and informal grievances.

Engagement with External Entities

  • Act as a key relationship builder for the Department for high-impact external stakeholders on pressing issues facing the Department.

  • Serve as an external representative for the Department at external meetings and events, as needed and assigned.

  • Identify and engage with other government departments, elected officials and offices on high priority issues facing the Department.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a total of ten (10) years of relevant professional experience, two (2) of which must have included experience with public or business administration, establishing goals and objectives, as well as developing and managing a budget to achieve program goals and objectives.

OPTION 1 -Experience Only:

OPTION 2 -Education and Experience:

A combination of related education in Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Affairs, Public Relations, Communications, Political Science, or a closely related field of study, and/or of professional experience to equal ten (10) years to include strategic advising to an organization or principal (such as an elected official, candidate for office, a senior-level executive, or a department director), oversight and/or management of high-impact projects, supervision of staff, and/or experience as an external representative of an organization. Two (2) of which must have included experience with public or business administration, establishing goals and objectives, as well as developing and managing a budget to achieve program goals and objectives.
